Abstract

This presentation will discuss how academic advising for distance learning students provides a pivotal connection between students and the institution. Discussion points to be covered will be the use of effective technology and appropriate processes that contribute to retention. Practicality and functionality will be a recurring theme throughout the session.

Extended Abstract

The goal of the presentation is to facilitate discussion on how advisement is an integral part of engagement. Processes and initiatives in progress, planning, and implementation at Georgia Perimeter College distance learning office will be discussed. Further reference will be made to initiatives and processes at other institutions as noted through the NACADA clearinghouse reference link and research articles. Analysis will be given to engagement, what it is, and why a myriad of research continues to show it yields and/or contributes to retention. Objective At the sessions closure participants should be able to identify proven strategies and processes that are effective, functional, practical, and cost effective. Interactive discussion will also facilitate team building. Instructional Methods The session will include a presentation coupled with talking points for discussion and reflection.
