Extended Abstract

How can we change professional development opportunities to meet the needs of educators? How can we create a safe online learning environment to enhance our traditional k-12 classrooms? In Cabell County Schools, we decided to use the MOODLE platform to answer these questions. During this presentation, we will take users through our first year of using MOODLE, different ways to implement MOODLE for educational purposes, and some tips for starting this process. In the summer of 2009, we purchased a computer server to hold our virtual platform and began using MOODLE. During the 2009-2010 school year, we implemented district wide professional development opportunities that included the use of MOODLE. Some trainings were held completely online, some were a blended format, and others used MOODLE as a location for follow-up after the training was complete. We also started using MOODLE to provide Driver's Education course work to allow the teachers to spend more time driving with students as the classwork was completed with students working online. A small cadre of teachers were trained to create courses using MOODLE. These teachers created their courses and began using them with their students. Many teachers saw this as a great way to modify assignments. Others chose to use the platform for their advanced students that were taking higher level courses through independent study. During our first year of using MOODLE as a school district, we have learned many surprises. Come and learn about the ups and downs of implementing MOODLE in your school district.
