Abstract

The Sloan Survey, the leading barometer of online learning in the United States, has been collecting data on online learning in higher education for the past eight years.  Using the most recent findings and eight-year trends, coupled with similar studies of higher education faculty and conducted in the K-12 universe, the authors provide an analysis of the evolution of online learning in the United States and speculate where it is going.  Specifically, the presentation focuses on:

  • trend data on the extent and nature of online learning in higher education, including findings from the most recent survey of chief academic officers conducted in 2010
  • trend data on the extent and nature of online learning in K-12 education, including findings from a 2010 study of American high school principals
  • data on faculty attitudes and perceptions of their experiences in developing and teaching online courses and programs

This session will conclude with an examination of the question:  Is online learning transforming education?
