Sloan-C JALN Advisory Panels

JALN is one of the most important channels for advancing the quality, scale and breadth of online education. As an institutional and professional leadership organization dedicated to integrating online education into the mainstream of higher education, Sloan-C seeks to fully engage its members in developing content that reflects and directs the growth of educational quality, scale and breadth. To more closely integrate publications with other Sloan-C activities, Sloan-C JALN Advisory Panels may issue calls for papers for special issues of JALN or other publications or projects  to advance the field of online and blended education. Each of the five advisory panels focuses on areas related to the quality framework—learning effectiveness, access, faculty and students, and scale. The Advisory Panels are composed of leading researchers, practitioners and administrators.

Learning Effectiveness - Access - Faculty - Students - Scale

Learning Effectiveness

Learning effectiveness ensures that online and blended students are provided with a high quality education with outcomes that meet or exceed institutional, industry, and/or community standards. The Sloan-C JALN advisory panel for learning effectiveness seeks work that explores online and blended learning from a variety of perspectives. Of particular interest are studies that investigate

the pedagogical affordances of online environments;
evidence-based effective practices and instructional designs, especially those that improve learning outcomes; and
theory-based models of online learning and/or research that supports them.

Access

Access is the value that asserts that all individuals have the opportunity to obtain a quality education. For the Sloan Consortium, the focus of access relates to anytime, anywhere education via online and blended learning. Delivering education in these modes offers opportunities and challenges for learners and for institutions alike. The Sloan-C JALN advisory panel for access seeks research that advances knowledge about

access to education for diverse and underserved learning populations,
new technologies that enhance access, and
policies for the administration of online and blended education that demonstrably increase access.

Faculty Satisfaction, Development and Support

Faculty satisfaction with online teaching, support services and development opportunities is an essential component of quality. For the Sloan Consortium, the focus on faculty satisfaction, development and support relates to anytime, anywhere education via online and blended learning. Because faculty and learners benefit from development and support services, the Sloan-C JALN advisory panel seeks research related to faculty, including

models of faculty development and support that promote effective practice in teaching and learning,
methods that improve faculty development and satisfaction, including workload management, and
emerging trends that impact faculty.

 Student Engagement, Support and Success

The student experience, including engagement, satisfaction, success and support in online and blended learning, reflects the effectiveness of all aspects of the educational enterprise. The Sloan-C JALN advisory panel seeks research that advances knowledge about

critical aspects of the personal online learning experience,
theoretical frameworks for student engagement, support and success and research that support or advance such frameworks,

Scale

Scale is the principle that enables institutions to offer the best educational quality to online and blended learners and to achieve capacity enrollment. While technologies make access possible for millions more learners and while demand for online and blended education grows, fiscal and regulatory requirements pose continuous challenges. The Sloan-C JALN advisory panel for scale seeks research that advances knowledge about

cost effective practices and models for successfully scaling programs that will benefit those entering and already engaged in online and blended education;
policies, strategies and technologies for scalability efforts within and across institutions; and
responses to regulatory requirements and competing fiscal demands.
