Kathleen S. Ives, D.M.
Acting Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director
Kathleen S. Ives, D.M. has worked in online technology for over 20 years and serves as The Sloan Consortium's Associate Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer where she oversees the organization's operations as well as facilitates workshops in higher education online best practices. Formerly, Dr. Ives oversaw all forms of alternative instruction at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, MA (distance learning, accelerated programming). She teaches in on-ground, online, and blended modalities for University of Phoenix and Bay State College in Boston, MA. Additionally, she serves on the Massachusetts Department of Education Distance Learning Advisory Board.
Dr. Ives began her career at CBS and helped to develop the service that evolved into Prodigy. She then spent fourteen years designing and implementing consumer online information services, first at AT&T and then at Verizon where she spearheaded the development of the nation's first online Yellow Pages product, now called superpages.com. Dr. Ives has degrees in communication, communication management, and organizational leadership from the University of California at Davis, the University of Southern California, Annenberg School of Communication, and the University of Phoenix-Online, respectively.
Sandi Fecteau, M.B.A.
Chief Financial Officer
Sandi Fecteau serves as the Chief Financial Officer for the Sloan Consortium. She possesses entrepreneurial financial expertise in Fortune 500, private and non-profit settings. Prior to coming to the Sloan Consortium, Ms. Fecteau worked as a consultant; advising start-up companies in all aspects of accounting, finance, business, and strategic planning. Prior to consulting, Ms. Fecteau served as controller for Verizon’s Electronic Commerce Services, where she served as a member of the leadership team, as well as directed and managed all aspects of accounting, financial planning/budgeting and analysis, measurements, billing and collections, and policies and procedures for this start-up electronic commerce business. Ms. Fecteau earned her M.B.A from Bentley College in Massachusetts.
Acting Chief Operating Officer
Thomas Hargis is a media, publishing and information industry veteran with more than 20 years of experience in domestic and global markets. Through his career, Tom has held senior positions in sales, marketing, product development, business development and business operations for Comtex, Infoseek, Stratfor, YellowBrix, Worldspace, and has served in the United States Marine Corps infantry. Major clients of his consulting practice include Iron Mountain, The Christian Science Monitor, and Verizon/MCI, among others.
Christine Hinkley has worked in sales and marketing for over 25 years. She currently serves as The Sloan Consortium's Director, Conferences. In this capacity, Christine, in conjuction with the Associate Director, Conferences and the Corporate Relations Representative, provides direction and leadership toward the planning and implementation of Sloan-C's three annual conferences. Formerly, Christine assisted with Sloan-C's conferences as part of her duties as Business Development Manager at The University of Central Florida's Division of Continuing Education. Christine's sales, marketing and business development skills were honed through the years in the transportation and medical fields, where she served in various sales and product management roles for Roche Molecular Diagnostics, Baxter Scientific Products, REMEL Microbiology, and CF AirFreight. Christine is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a B.B.A. Business Administration- Marketing.
Sandra Coswatte has worked in higher education over 15 years and currently serves as the Director of the Sloan-C Institute. She has worked with Sloan-C since 2008 in a variety of positions such as workshop facilitation, mentoring, production, and social networking. Former work experience was gained at West Virginia University, Lesley University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, University of Phoenix and Urban College of Boston Sandra has earned a B.A. in psychology and a M.S. in Community Agency Counseling from California University of PA as well as a M.A. in Higher Education Leadership and Administration from West Virginia University.
Director, Member Services
Heather Fidalgo has been a consultant for Sloan-C since 2009, and currently serves as Director, Operations. She holds a BA in Communications, with dual concentrations in Public Relations and Journalism. Heather worked in the Marketing/Communications field for ten years prior to making the move to online education.
Jean Fredrick, M.B.A.
Jean Fredrick has over 20 years’ experience in online marketing, product development and project management. Jean is currently the Director, Marketing for The Sloan Consortium, focusing on the growth of a multitude of core services and product initiatives. Jean previously served as Executive Marketing Director for The Kelsey Group, a strategic research and analysis leader in online directories and local media. Prior to this, Jean was Marketing Manager for Verizon’s online yellow pages team leading the successful creation and launch of today’s Superpages.com. As a marketing consultant, Jean has worked on projects for Stratfor, focusing on geopolitical, economic, political and military information services, and YellowBrix, focusing on data analytics and contextual advertising. Jean holds a BS in Business Administration from Emmanuel College in Boston and an MBA in Marketing from Post University in Waterbury, CT.
Kathryn (Katie) Fife Schuster
Associate Director, Conferences
Katie Fife Schuster is the Associate Director, Conferences for Sloan-C. In conjunction with the Director, Conferences and the Corporate Relations Representative, Katie provides direction and leadership toward the achievement of Sloan-C's annual conferences. Proir to her current role, she held the position of Director of Online Learning for Sloan-C and managed the planning, development, and production activities of the workshop program. She has also been Sloan-C's Director of Publications. She has experience from her years in the publishing industry prior to joining Sloan-C and holds a BA from Tufts University in anthropology and Spanish.
Associate Director, Marketing
Joanna Tong first joined the Sloan-C Consortium in 2006 as a Marketing Coordinator. Now as Associate Director, Member Service, she manages activities involving memberships and retention, online workshops, teaching certificates, and conferences. Joanna also publishes the Sloan-C View, member, College Pass, and conference, newsletters. She graduated with a B.S. in Marketing from Bentley College in Waltham, MA. Prior to joining Sloan-C, she was the Marketing Assistant for the Boston General Office of New York Life Insurance Company.
Associate Director, Customer Service
Gail Sullivan joined The Sloan Consortium, Inc. in the fall of 2006. In this capacity, Gail is primarily responsible for processing the registrations for membership, workshops and conferences as well as resolving issues raised by workshop participants and members. In her capacity as the assistant to the Director of Online Education, Dr. Kathleen S. Ives, Gail is the secondary contact person for our workshop facilitators. She is also responsible for fulfilling requests for publications. Gail has a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University in Personnel and Industrial Relations and has been involved with Higher Education for approximately ten years.
Cathy Arreguin is an online educator and educational technologist, most recently working with San Diego State University, Department of Educational Technology, providing support and instruction for various SDSU EDTEC graduate courses and projects focusing on the effective implementation of online learning technologies in the classroom and workplace.
As an educator and consultant with a 20+ years in both K12 and non-profit work, she’s developed and implemented curriculum, training and educational media for both children and adults. She particularly enjoys coaching educators in applying effective instructional design principles and strategies to both in-class and online learning environments and activities.
Cathy has been a consultant with Sloan-C since 2008 and currently serves in the areas of workshop facilitation, production, content development, Certificate participant and mentor support, and as part of the Research Symposium team.
She has a B.A. in psychology from UCLA and a M.A. in Educational Technology from San Diego State University.
Holly Rae Bemis-Schurtz
Before joining the Sloan Consortium, Holly Rae Bemis-Schurtz, M.A. served as an educational technologies specialist, instructor, and an online course quality mentor at New Mexico State University. She has worked with both K-12 educators and higher education faculty to integrate new, emerging and social technologies. She has designed and developed programs and courses for learners of all ages, from kindergarten yoga to First Year Experience courses. Since 2007 she has focused on preparation for online and blended educators with a special focus on social media integration. Holly has been facilitating and supporting Sloan-C workshops since 2009 and currently supports the Institute as a Workshop Producer and workshop facilitator.
Bethany Bovard is an instructional designer and faculty for the Sloan-C Institute. Her primary interests are in the areas of online professional development of educators interested in learning how to design, develop, and teach online courses. Bethany's background in computer technologies began in the late 1970's and, while she is passionate about technology in general, she is equally passionate about helping faculty effectively use any technology to support the learning objectives of their courses. Bethany's work with Sloan-C allows her to indulge those passions daily.
Martine Dawant is a Sloan-C consultant in private practice. M.S., Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium). Her domain of work and research focuses on Asynchronous Learning Networks. She created and maintains the Sloan-C Web, a resource of information for online education practitioners and newcomers. She develops various web-based applications that support and distribute ALN knowledge and resources.
Jessica Donahoe provides front end development as well as technical and administrative support to the Technical Operations team. Her primary interests include site usability improvement, research, and development as well as conference and virtual conference support and administration. She liaises between the Technical Operations team and other business areas of Sloan-C.
Zeren Eder, along with producing workshops for Sloan-C, teaches online classes at University of Phoenix and in seat courses at the Orlando branch of Colombia College. She completed her education in Turkey where is originally from. She has an AA degree in Tourism Hotel management, BA on Education with emphasis on English, MA in Linguistics and holds ABD status in English Literature.
Board Clerk and HR Manager
Kate is the Human Resources Specialist for Sloan-C. She has been working in Human Resources for fifteen years in the non-profit, heath care, and engineering fields with a focus on employee relations, engagement, benefits implementation, and payroll. She received her PHR Certification in 2010 and is a 1998 graduate of Regis College with a BA Communications and Biology.
Business Development Representative
Matt Norsworthy is a Business Development Representative for The Sloan Consortium. He is responsible for establishing new memberships with institutions and working with existing institutions to meet their professional development needs in online and blended learning. He also serves as a Layout Editor for The Sloan Consortium’s, Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks (JALN), in preparing articles and issues for both print and online publication. Matt has been teaching English, Film, and Humanities in both online and traditional classrooms for over ten years. He has a Masters of Liberal Studies in English and an MFA in Creative Writing, and he is currently working on his dissertation for his doctorate in Higher Education and Organizational Change from Benedictine University.
Robert Pope consults with Sloan-C providing expertise in PHP and Drupal development. His primary focus is on making the Sloan-C website usable and enjoyable for members and staff. Robert also works to integrate the various technologies used at Sloan-C into a more cohesive user experience. He provides a wide range of expertise in leveraging technology as a force multiplier for businesses, non-profits and the military sector.
JALN Editor in Chief
Dr. Peter Shea is Associate Provost for Online Learning and Associate Professor in the School of Education and the College of Computing and Information at the University at Albany, State University of New York. His research focuses on the development of communities dedicated to learning in online environments. He has published widely on this topic in journals such as Computers and Education, JALN, Internet and Higher Education, The Journal of Educational Computing Research, Interactive Learning Environments and others. He is past director of the SUNY Learning Network, the online education enterprise of the 64 campus and 400,000 students in the SUNY system. Peter's research has been supported by the US Department of Education and The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. He has been co-recipient of three national awards for online learning, faculty development and online programs from EDUCAUSE and the Sloan Consortium.
|J. Patrick Wagner, PhD|
Prior to joining the Sloan Consortium in July 2009, Patrick served as Assistant Vice-President/Director of the Division of Continuing Education (DCE) at the University of Central Florida. From 2001-08, DCE provided management services for the Sloan Consortium Annual International Asynchronous Learning Networks Conference. Relative to conference development, he develops partnerships, provides planning and negotiation of venues and contracts, brokers the utilization of partnered and outsourced services, assists with program development, implementation and financial management. Patrick has 30+ years of experience in higher education administration. He has held continuing education senior management positions in the Florida, Montana, North Dakota and Wisconsin University systems. He earned his PhD in Educational Administration at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
