Mary Larson
Ms. Mary Larson is Associate Director of Student Access Programs and Services at the Southern Regional Education Board. She directs and manages activities related to all unit websites, including procedures, guidelines, related databases and appearance of the Electronic Campus, Adult Learning Campaign, EC Initiatives, Academic Common Market, Regional Contract. She provides general office management and budget support, including supervision of the assistant director and all support staff and coordinates the Regional Contract Program, including state and institutional communications, processing of invoices and payments, preparation of contracts and amendments, report preparation and distribution of annual appropriation letters. She has a Master’s Degree in Adult Education from the University of Georgia and a B.A. in English Literature from Montana State University.

 

Business Development


Chris Dufour
Chris Dufour joined Sloan-C in 2011 as a Business Development Representative. He is responsible for the sales of institutional memberships and College Passes to colleges and universities both nationally and internationally. Prior to joining Sloan-C Chris worked for Penn State University for 21 years in a variety of positions, most recently as an Education Planning and Strategy Manager in the Conferences office. He received his Doctor of Education degree from Penn State in 2003.

 

Conference Services


Christine Hinkley
Christine Hinkley has worked in sales and marketing for over 25 years.  She currently serves as The Sloan Consortium's Director of Conference Services. In this capacity, Christine, in conjuction with the Director, Conference Administration and the Director, Partnership and Business Development, provides direction and leadership toward the planning and implementation of Sloan-C's three annual conferences. Formerly, Christine assisted with Sloan-C's conferences as part of her duties as Business Development Manager at The University of Central Florida's Division of Continuing Education. Christine's sales, marketing and business development skills were honed through the years in the transportation and medical fields, where she served in various sales and product management roles for Roche Molecular Diagnostics, Baxter Scientific Products, REMEL Microbiology, and CF AirFreight. Christine is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a B.B.A. Business Administration- Marketing.

Patrick Wagner J. Patrick Wagner, PhD
Prior to joining the Sloan Consortium in July 2009, Patrick served as Assistant Vice-President/Director of the Division of Continuing Education (DCE) at the University of Central Florida. From 2001-08, DCE provided management services for the Sloan Consortium Annual International Asynchronous Learning Networks Conference. Relative to conference development, he develops partnerships, provides planning and negotiation of venues and contracts, brokers the utilization of partnered and outsourced services, assists with program development, implementation and financial management. Patrick has 30+ years of experience in higher education administration. He has held continuing education senior management positions in the Florida, Montana, North Dakota and Wisconsin University systems. He earned his PhD in Educational Administration at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

Sandra Coswatte

Holly Rae Bemis-Schurtz
Holly Rae Bemis-Schurtz, M.A. is an educational technologies specialist, instructor, and an online course quality mentor at New Mexico State University where she has worked with both K-12 educators and higher education faculty to integrate new, emerging and social technologies. She has designed and developed programs and courses for learners of all ages, from kindergarten yoga to First Year Experience courses. Since 2007 she has focused on preparation for online and blended educators. Holly has been facilitating and supporting Sloan-C workshops since 2009 and currently supports the Institute as a Workshop Producer and social media facilitator.


Sandra Coswatte

Sandra Coswatte
Sandra Coswatte has worked with the Sloan Consortium as a consultant since 2008. She works as an events producer for workshops and webinars. In addition,she also works on Sloan-C social networking. Outside of Sloan-C, Sandra serves as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Phoenix and South University. She has been teaching online and in person at the Boston and Pittsburgh campuses with the University of Phoenix and Axia College since 2003. Sandra has also taught for 3 years at West Virginia University in the Freshman Year Experience program. Sandra has a B.A. in psychology and a M.S. in Community Agency Counseling from California University of PA as well as a M.A. in Higher Education Leadership and Administration from West Virginia University.


Mehera Dennison
Mehera Dennison serves Sloan-C as an Associate Workshop Producer and copy and layout editor for the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks.  She has a BA in English from Wake Forest, an MFA in Poetry from George Mason and an MA in Literature from Vanderbilt University.

 

 


Mercy Dennison
Mercy Dennison is currently working as an Associate Workshop Producer for the Sloan Consortium as well as serving as a copy editor for the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks.  She holds a BA in Creative Writing from Goddard College. 

 

 


Zeren Eder
Zeren Eder, along with producing workshops for Sloan-C, teaches online classes at University of Phoenix and in seat courses at the Orlando branch of Colombia College. She completed her education in Turkey where is originally from. She has an AA degree in Tourism Hotel management, BA on Education with emphasis on English, MA in Linguistics and holds ABD status in English Literature.

 


Heather Fidalgo
Heather Fidalgo has been a consultant for Sloan-C since 2009, and currently serves as their Workshop Production Manager. She holds a BA in Communications, with dual concentrations in Public Relations and Journalism. Heather worked in the Marketing/Communications field for ten years prior to making the move to online education.


Carol Johnson

Carol Johnson
Carol Johnson serves as a consultant for Sloan-C and is the Director of The Virtual School of Music, an innovative and technologically-based online music school. She is an active technology educator and musician throughout North and South America. Her previous university teaching appointments include Belmont University, Nashville, TN and Taylor University, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, as well as various K-12 public school positions. Currently, Ms. Johnson is completing her Doctor of Musical Arts in e-learning technology. An established educational writer, Ms. Johnson has published numerous music book series for both the elementary through professional music student.


Julia Parra
Julia Parra has worked with the Sloan Consortium since 2009 as the facilitator for the Online Teaching Certificate 9-week foundation course. She is an assistant professor at New Mexico State University (NMSU). She co-develops and teaches for NMSU's Online Teaching and Learning Graduate Certificate in the College of Extended Learning and also for the College of Education's Educational Learning Technologies program. She works with a great team at NMSU on a variety of projects including faculty/teacher professional development for online teaching & classroom technology integration; development and delivery of NMSU Webinars; and uses of emerging technologies & social media in education.


Kendal E. Peirce
Kendal E. Peirce serves as an Associate Workshop Producer for the Sloan Consortium as well as author of Sloan-C’s practitioner documents. She recently returned from Madrid, Spain where she spent a year teaching English as a Second Language for Canterbury English. Ms. Peirce will be pursuing her MA in Communication at New York University in the Fall of 2011, with an emphasis on millennial adaptation of online technology. She received her B.S. in Physical Anthropology from UMass-Amherst. 


Libby Pierce
Libby Pierce
Libby is an Associate Workshop Producer for Sloan-C. Libby has been working in education for twenty-seven years as a Special Educator and a School Counselor for students in middle school and high school.   She has a B.S. in Education from Lesley University in Cambridge, Ma and a Masters in Educational Counseling from Providence College in Providence, RI.

Bethany Bovard

Bethany Bovard
Bethany Bovard is an adjunct teacher and staff at New Mexico State University, where she teaches and develops distance education programs and courses. Her primary interestes and work all relateto professional development of educators interested in learning how to integrate technology into their courses and how to teach online. Bethany's background in computer technologies began in the late 1970's when she took her first programming class, and she continues to be an avid user of all types of computer technology. While she is passionate about technology in general, her real interest is in helping teachers and faculty find and select the right technologies to support the learning objectives of their courses. Bethany's work with Sloan-C as a woskshop creator and facilitator allows her to indulge those passions daily.

Jeff Seaman

Jeff Seaman, Ph.D.
Jeff Seaman has worked in education information technology for over 20 years. In addition to teaching at such schools as Cornell, the University of Wisconsin, and the Wharton School, he has created and run information technology organizations for the University of Pennsylvania and Lesley University. The client list for his consulting company, Pondview Associates, includes schools such as Harvard, Tufts, Boston University, Brandeis, and the University of Pennsylvania and technology vendors including IBM and Microsoft. He has served on advisory boards for many technology companies, including Apple, Claris, IBM, Microsoft, and Word Perfect. His industry experience includes serving as Chief Technology Officer at HighWired.com where he led the development of an online learning system and as the Vice President of Engineering for Vista Associates where he did functional design work and led the engineering team. Dr. Seaman has degrees in Demography/Statistics, Sociology, Electrical Engineering, and Housing, all from Cornell University.

Martine Dawant

Martine Dawant
Martine Dawant is a Sloan-C consultant in private practice. M.S., Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium). Her domain of work and research focuses on Asynchronous Learning Networks. She created and maintains the Sloan-C Web, a resource of information for online education practitioners and newcomers. She develops various web-based applications that support and distribute ALN knowledge and resources. She creates online workshops and seminars.

 



Robert Pope
Robert Pope consults with Sloan-C providing expertise in PHP and Drupal development.  His primary focus is on making the Sloan-C website usable and enjoyable for members and staff.  Robert also works to integrate the various technologies used at Sloan-C into a more cohesive user experience.  He provides a wide range of expertise in leveraging technology as a force multiplier for businesses, non-profits and the military sector. 

 

 

Accessibility Consultants

The Sloan Consortium is committed to ensuring its online educational offerings are useable and accessible by individuals of different backgrounds. To that end, we maintain an ongoing collaboration with two individuals who are experts in the field. Janie Jarrow, Ph.D. helps to ensure conference activities are accessible to all attendees and Valerie Haven provides instructional design accessibility consulting for the Sloan-C Institute. Additionally, both Janie Jarrow and Valerie Haven facilitate workshops on various topics of accessibility in online education.

Conference

Janie Jarrow
Jane Jarrow, Ph. D. is the President of Disability Compliance in Career and Online Learning (DCCOL) and of Disability Access Information and Support (DAIS). Dr. Jarrow received her BS and MS degrees from PurdueUniversity and her Ph.D. from WichitaStateUniversity. Her academic preparation was in the area of Speech/Language Pathology.

She was a full-time faculty member at The Ohio State University in Speech/Language Pathology for seven years before assuming a position as the Executive Director of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD). AHEAD is an international professional membership organization providing technical assistance, information, and support to individuals involved in issues of disability access in higher education.  
Dr. Jarrow is a skilled presenter and speaks knowledgeably about the legal and educational mandates surrounding the participation of persons with disabilities in postsecondary settings. Throughout her 14 year tenure with AHEAD, and more than 15 years in her current position with DAIS, Dr. Jarrow has traveled extensively, presenting workshops and training sessions focused on these issues. Through DAIS, Dr. Jarrow also provides technical assistance, conducts policy reviews and site reviews, participates in grant writing and editing, and is the author/publisher of a number of significant resource materials.

In 2006, Dr. Jarrow joined with a number of experienced disability service providers to create a new resource for the higher education community. Disability Compliance in Career and Online Learning (DCCOL) is considered one of the most influential sources of information regarding the policies and practices associated with accommodation students with disabilities in online learning. Instead of focusing on the technology required to assure accessible materials, Dr. Jarrow's focus is on the use of technology as one tool among many necessary to fulfill the federal mandates for full access to online educational opportunities for students with disabilities.

 

Workshops and Webinars

Valerie Haven
Valerie Claire Haven is adjunct faculty and staff at the University of Massachusetts. She teaches graduate courses in accessibility and inclusive learning in online education for both UMass and the University of Southern Maine. Valerie also does consulting on accessibility issues related to technology and pedagogy for technologically-mediated instruction. Her primary interests and work relate to supporting faculty and staff to integrate assistive technology into their courses as easily as possible.

Valerie’s career in assistive technology and on-line learning began in 2001 when she was hired to support the start-up of a new distance-based graduate program at UMass. She is an avid user of all types of assistive technology and develops toolkit suites to support learners with various disabilities and diverse learning styles taking on-line courses. While she is passionate about technology in general, her real interest is in helping teachers and faculty find and select the right technologies to support the learning objectives of their courses. Valerie is also the 2010 recipient of Sloan’s President’s Special Award for Outstanding Achievement by An Individual in the Field of On-line learning

Linda Enghagen
The Sloan Consortium is committed to upholding integrity in online education and supports the key tenants of the TEACH ACT. The Sloan Consortium maintains a partnership with Linda Enghagen, a leading expert in the field and a facilitator of several workshops on the topics of copyright compliance and the TEACH ACT.

Linda Enghagen is an attorney and Professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her teaching career began in distance learning when she first taught Engineering Law & Ethics as part of the university’s Video Instructional Program in 1984. In 1990, she became the first woman to receive an Outstanding Instructor Award from National Technological University, which also offered her course. In 2002, she received a second Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Food & Natural Resources at the University of Massachusetts.

Professor Enghagen teaches cyberlaw at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and developed a corporate training program entitled Information Technology and the Law: Software, the Internet and E-mail in conjunction with the PBS Business & Technology Network. Her scholarly contributions related to intellectual property are directed to the needs of faculty members. Her publications include two books, Technology and Higher Education: Approaching the 21st Century and Fair Use Guidelines for Educators, as well as numerous articles such as Fair Use in an Electronic World and Copyright Law and Fair Use—Why Ignorance Isn’t Bliss. She also developed a pamphlet entitled Educators, Technology and the Law: Common Questions/Direct Answers and a brochure entitled Legal Literacy in the Information Age—Ten (easy to understand) Rules of Thumb. In addition, she has been a guest commentator on a local NPR affiliate where she discussed copyright piracy in a piece entitled Napster Worries Me. She is also a copyright expert for the Sloan Consortium and regularly delivers lectures and workshops on copyright law as it relates to educational settings.
