Professional Development: The Blended Model Using Moodle
Teacher Training Using a Blended Model: We are presented with less funding, less time, and less personnel to provide professional development training. If teacher training could be presented online, we could meet the needs of more people providing convenience to the participant and allowing for more opportunities for trainers to become facilitators of the training process rather than providing numerous presentations face to face which are time consuming and expensive. To save time and money, creating training sites in Moodle allows for organizations to provide valuable information to their staff at a fraction of the cost and at their convenience. Posting Training objectives, uploading videos of training presentations, and creating an online assessment in a Moodle Training Site could take the place of many face to face training components eliminating the need for trainers, reserving rooms, filling out paperwork for assessment and documentation. Moodle provides the electronic means to collaborate and assess participants and is a secure place to store content and information. Integrating a synchronous component for supplemental training and support allows for a more personalized approach to training. This session will demonstrate 2 models used for professional development in the 23rd largest public school district in the United States. With over 12,000 teachers in a large district, the need for effective professional development is a priority. Implementing a blended approach to training educators using Moodle CMS has proven to be effective and rewarding using these 2 online training models.
Participants will:
* indentify the structure and key components for an effective online training site
* understand the benefits of both demonstrated models of online professional development
* understand how to use Moodle's assessment activities to measure participants' knowledge
* use Moodle user logs to document training activity
* how to integrate Synchronous and asynchronous opportunities to enhance the training participants learning experience
The content that will be presented for this session will be 2 online professional development sites in which 12,000 educators actively engaging in content to apply to their professional development plans. Both models are blended with a synchronous element, one through a final face to face meeting and the other integrating an online meeting through Elluminate. These features are seamlessly integrated within the training modules that will be presented to the conference session participants. We will access both training sites live and present the overall organization of the training sites, the documentation of the learners' activity logs, and the assessments in each training site.
