Preparing Preservice Teachers for 21st Century Classroom via Face-to-Face & Online Learning
This presentation discusses how blended learning is integrated into a preservice teachers' technology integration methods course. In the course preservice teachers attend class twice a week and access all course materials via a web enhancement. Examples of instructional strategies will be provided.
Blended learning can be as or more effective than traditional face-to-face instruction particularly in higher education when students are often pressed for time and are wanting access to course materials outside of the typical classroom seat time. Likewise, engaging learners via face-to-face instruction and differing technologies supports their multiple learning styles. This presentation discusses how blended learning is integrated into one preservice teacher's technology integration methods course. In the methods course preservice teachers attend class twice a week, access all course materials and participate in online activities via a web enhancement/online course environment. The web enhancement/online course environment provides the course schedule, instruction including FAQs, examples of anticipated work, online discussions, and interactive activities to support the preservice teachers' learning. Preservice teachers are taught to develop technology-supported lesson plans, participate in telecollaborative projects, create blogs as means of communication with students and parents/guardians, and develop and participate in professional development via technology. In this presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to see such activities and learn how effective they are in supporting learning and preparing preservice teachers to teach in 21st century classrooms.
