Blogs and microblogs can be used to stay connected to students in both formal and informal ways. Classes can form a community around web 2.0 tools which can support students in their learning.

The session will start off with some definitions and information about blogs and microblogs and what are some public and private and private options including using blogs within an LMS (we use Blackboard). Twitter will be the main microblog service covered but others will be mentioned as well. Examples, both formal and informal, will be given for both which will show how community and collaboration can be fostered through these tools. The immediacy and ease of Twitter will also be discussed as strengths towards building a class community.
