Competitive faculty resource development grants were awarded for conversion of face-to-face classroom courses to a 50/50 blended model, as a University strategy to expand hybrid course offerings. Lessons learned from first round grants influenced changes in the program for 2009, resulting in more competitive and higher quality grant submissions.

Rutgers University has enjoyed continued growth in the development and delivery of fully online courses using the Pearson eCollege course management system. There was institutional interest, for a variety of reasons, in growing robust interactive hybrid or blended courses. A grant program, funded by the Summer Session office, was used to stimulate the initial development of nearly 20 hybrid courses. Lessons learned from the first round of the grant program were used to inform the second round. Improvements were made to the application and screening process, and the faculty training program was redesigned. As a result, 20 high-quality applicants were selected out of 50 proposals submitted. Training sessions have been tailored to meet the experience level of the applicants and to assist in the production of highly interactive blended courses. This PowerPoint guided presentation will show how the Rutgers Hybrid Course Grant Program has evolved, including an overview of the criteria established and later revised for faculty who want to be considered for a grant. In addition, the session will address the regularly scheduled workshops for faculty on three Rutgers campuses who are interested in converting their face-to-face courses to a blended model. Specific topics to be covered include:-Rutgers Continuing Studies Department definition of a hybrid course-Grant program application process and rationale-Faculty training design-Course review process-Lessons Learned
