Abstract

Participants will learn best practices and engagement principles which gives them a true experience of being student. enrolled in a Distributed Learning Environment

Extended Abstract

This presentation will demonstrate the use of the Effective Online Instruction (EOI) course for faculty at the University of South Carolina. The goal was to teach faculty how to be successful in teaching blended and online courses. The course, based on the best practices and engagement principles, gave faculty a hands-on experience of what it was like to be a student enrolled in a distributed learning environment. It was designed to expose faculty to technologies they can incorporate into their classes whether it be blended or completely online. During the summer of 2011, seventy-one faculty/staff from twenty disciplines from USC campuses statewide enrolled in the asynchronous course and experienced online learning from the learner's perspective. Participants attending this session will learn through demonstrations how online technologies and social media components such as Wikis, Facebook, Discussion Boards, YouTube, and Adobe Connect can be utilized in effective teaching and learning, and what works and what does not work well in blended learning environments. A faculty member who was a student in the EOI course will discuss how Facebook, Discussion Boards and YouTube videos are being utilized in blended courses. The presenters will engage the audience through interactive group discussions and handouts and ask the audience to share their pedagogies for effective blended teaching and learning.
