Abstract

This poster presentation explores how modern self-paced online instruction and interactive video methods can strengthen an organization's blended learning model.

Extended Abstract

The University of Central Oklahoma has offered paper-based correspondence courses since the late 1800's and interactive video education courses since the mid-1990's. Many higher education institutions are currently considering ending these programs citing high operational costs and diminishing demand from students as online courses continue to experience exponential growth. While this may appear to be a logical approach for higher education decision-makers, there is great potential to innovate and expand on how these learning methods support an institution's blended learning capabilities.

The definition of a "traditional" college student remains to be established in this dynamic and market-driven higher education landscape. Students are seeking more flexible and ubiquitously available methods of learning than are currently available at many institutions. This presentation examines how traditional methods of distance learning such as paper-based correspondence courses and "talk-back TV" courses can be transformed to meet the ever-growing demand for high-quality and flexible learning experiences. Specific use cases and implications for future research and practice are presented and discussed within the context of the University of Central Oklahoma.

After attending this presentation, participants will:
Develop methods for using self-paced online courses and interactive video courses within a greater blended learning framework
Explain the procedures for converting paper-based correspondence courses to self-paced online courses
Discuss considerations for implementing interactive video education courses across various organizational contexts
Discuss implications of self-paced online instruction and interactive video on the future of blended learning research and practice

Participants will have access to a community wiki, related resources, and planning documents.
