Abstract

Learn critical components for developing a K-12 blended learning program. Examine essential planning questions, implementation strategies, and promising practices to jumpstart your opportunities.

Extended Abstract

Wisconsin Virtual School (WVS) is Wisconsin's state-led supplemental program. WVS has provided online opportunities to more than 18,000 students since 2000 and currently serving more than 250 Wisconsin schools with online and blended learning services. WVS is a partner in the Wisconsin Digital Learning Collaborative with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and the Wisconsin eSchool Network (WEN). Our experience in online and blended learning and our collaborative efforts in Wisconsin set the stage for an interactive session that will ensure schools have the essentials to plan, implement, and evaluate a quality K-12 blended learning program.

There are critical components to be considered when growing your blended learning program for K-12 students such as benefits and limitations, managing resources, and developing a quality implementation plan. Educational leaders will learn about the investment considerations, evaluation and assessment, and management of their digital learning initiatives.

We'll start with the "essential planning questions" in the first of a three part interactive workshop. Educational leaders will be provided an overview of navigating and utilizing a quality planning tool. Each leader will have an opportunity to put planning into action in small groups as they role play as members of a district implementation team meeting.

Following a whole audience debriefing of the planning simulation, participants will be provided promising practices and strategies to ready and support students in the blended environment. Wisconsin Virtual School has developed successful strategies to prepare and support blended students such as a student contract and a recipe for a student and parent readiness orientations. We will provide educational leaders practical and proven strategies that can be implemented immediately for a successful student experiences.

In the third portion of the workshop, educational leaders will learn the critical ingredients in supporting their blended learning teachers with the necessary professional development. Questions explored and promising practices shared will include:
 

  • What does good online and blended learning instruction look like?
  • What professional development is needed for first-time online or blended learning teachers?
  • What might a Professional Learning Community (PLC) look like for online or blended learning teachers?
  • What professional development need as to be provided for experienced online and blended teachers?


Upon exit of this experience, educational leaders will have the essentials to plan, implement, and administer a local blended learning program that supports students and the quality teaching that is needed for successful blended learning programs.

Lead Presenter

Dawn Nordine is the Executive Director of Wisconsin Virtual School (WVS), the state-led supplemental online program for grades 6-12, operated out of CESA 9. Since 2000 WVS has provided online courses for over 18,000 students. She has been in the education field for twenty-two years. Formerly a superintendent and technology coordinator of a rural school district, Dawn has been actively involved in the expanding online and blended learning opportunities for students in Wisconsin for ten years.

Dawn had presented at numerous state and national conferences such as the National Science Teacher's Association Conference, Governor's Wisconsin Education Technology Conference (GWETC), Wisconsin Educational Media Association (WEMTA) Conference, Wisconsin Chapter of the National At-Risk Education Network (NARENWICH) Conference, North American Council for Environmental Education Conference, Wisconsin Association of District Administrators Conference, Wisconsin State Education Convention, Association of Educational Service Agencies (AESA) National Convention, and iNACOL's Virtual School Symposium (VSS) for eight of the last nine years.
