Steve Wheeler (Plymouth University, UK)Keynote Address90 MinutesVirtual Session
We are witnessing an exponential rise in the use of social media and mobile technology in education. We have seen widespread use of blogging and social networks, Twitter and social tagging, wikis and collaborative filtering, recommender systems. All of these and more, are impacting upon the world of education, disrupting traditional practices and challenging familiar social and cultural mores. Coupled with the rise in use of mobile phones, handheld computing and the soon to arrive wearable computing and augmented reality tools, are we on the crest of a new wave of learning? New technologies transform the nature of human thought, alter our perspectives and challenge our practices. What new cultures of learning are emerging as a result of the new technologies? How should education respond to new expectations and perceptions? Using examples from recent research this presentation will explore the new ways students are learning, and provide some examples of how education might adapt to these new trends.

Session 1: Teach a MOOC ... what are you, crazy? (8:30am-10am)
Description: If you’ve ever actually taught an online course, the thought of teaching a MOOC sounds like an absolutely crazy idea. It’s hard to get past the idea that you might be multiplying all your “online student” headaches by a factor of 100 or 1000. Well, those were my first thoughts about it too. However, what I learned was that teaching a MOOC has been the purest and most fun form of teaching and learning that I’ve ever done. Teaching a MOOC is a complete paradigm shift from traditional education in terms of the design, the assessment requirements, and the diversity of students. As the manager of courses for Canvas Network, we’ve learned a lot about how to design a good online course for students who struggle with English, span all the time zones in the world, and have very different learning goals. In this talk I will share my own teaching experiences and surprises and give you an in-depth tour of the Social Media course on Canvas Network (the course that I teach). This course is publicly available, so you can play along and explore as I talk about the learning design decisions made in this course.
Session 2: Designing a Canvas Network Course (10:30am-12noon)
Description: In the second half of this workshop, we'll talk about redesigning traditional course content for open courses, which generally have high enrollments and may include students from all over the world. This requires a paradigm shift for many of the activities traditionally used in online teaching. Participants should come with a particular course in mind that they would like to redesign for the MOOC environment. Participants will learn how to manage a large number of students using Canvas features like Groups, Discussions, Collaborations and Peer Review. Prior to the session, participants should create a free Canvas sandbox to play in during the workshop. -

During the last few years, emerging technologies and online learning have dominated narratives regarding the future of education and the potential role that technology may play in education. Are we reaching a point where "anyone can learn anything from anyone else at any time?" Or, are Google, Facebook, and Twitter "infantilizing our minds," distracting us from meaningful learning and purposeful living? As societies, governments, and other social groups adapt and change over time, so do institutions of learning, the work that they do, and how they do that work. In this presentation, I will share seven research-based stories describing the integration of emerging technologies in learning environments. These stories paint an intricate picture of online learning with emerging technologies and demonstrate how (a) emerging learning technologies have impacted educational practice, (b) the use of emerging technologies “on the ground” is often negotiated and contested, and (c) a “culture of sharing” may be finding increasing acceptance in education under emerging phenomena such as Massive Open Online Courses, Open Educational Resources, and social media use by scholars. These stories highlight how learning and education are (and are not) changing with the emergence of certain technologies, social behaviors, and cultural expectations.

Several years ago Riverside City College’s School of Nursing added virtual classrooms and began using lecture capture to increase program enrollment without adding faculty. Unofficially dubbed the "PJs Program", the webcast courses provide students the flexibility to continue their education without leaving work and ultimately prepare more nurses for advanced clinical practice than classroom instruction alone. Join Stephen Ashby, the technical architect of Riverside's pioneering online nursing program, as he shares how Riverside's use of Mediasite to automate lecture capture has helped the program thrive in spite of statewide budget cuts in education.

The Society Pages.org is a non-for-profit, open-access website dedicated to bringing sociology to broader public visibility and influence. This session will provide a brief overview of the site and the ways in which it tries to meet these goals. It will then focus specifically on the teaching content that is on the site, and how those materials and other content on the site are used by sociology instructors and in university classrooms. The publishing partnership with W.W. Norton that helps support and sustain the site will also be explained. Throughout the session is intended to suggest ideas and raise questions about both supporting and using on-line content for university-level teaching and instruction in the social sciences.

April 11, 2013 - 1:00pmJen Ross (University of Edinburgh, Scotland)Unconference SessionMelrose 3/4180 Minutes
To close the conference, an ‘open space technology’ session will be held in Melrose 3 & 4, to give us all some space and time to develop ideas and have in-depth discussions. The session will begin with a provocation: “if it isn’t broken...”.
There are a number of possible directions this could take - including:
- what is ‘it’?
- if it was broken, how would we know?
- is ‘doing nothing’ an option? what would it look like?
- … don’t ‘fix’ it - stability and stasis
- the state of formal educational structures and policies
- the so-called “ed bubble”
- the need, or otherwise, for radical technological interventions for learning and for education
- Come for as long as you can, contribute your ideas and questions, and be part of something really special.
As the authors of the Openspaceworld wiki put it:
*Open Space works best when the work to be done is complex, the people and ideas involved are diverse, the passion for resolution (and potential for conflict) are high, and the time to get it done was yesterday. It's been called passion bounded by responsibility, the energy of a good coffee break, intentional self-organization, spirit at work, chaos and creativity, evolution in organization, and a simple, powerful way to get people and organizations moving - when and where it's needed most. http://www.openspaceworld.org/cgi/wiki.cgi?AboutOpenSpace*
