Abstract

2 Release ID is a model for quick online and blended course development. This model was determined by the Author's examination of best practices from a combined 16 years of instructional design experience. The model focuses on quality, scalability, and timeliness.

Extended Abstract

The poster presentation will visually represent a new course development model authored by Dr. Stephanie Sutcliffe and Joel Rodriguez. The poster presentation will look to address the following:

  • What is the model?
  • When does the model apply?
  • Which instructional systems design models are used?
  • What is the potential increase in quality?
  • How is speed of delivery affected?
  • What is the impact on scalability?

The 2 Release ID Model was developed for organizations interested in creating online or blended courses. The organization could be an experienced developer, or a novice in this area. The model is broken into two phases. In the first phase the organization identifies their minimal standards for online courses, selects an instructional systems design model (ISDM), and then starts to develop course(s) using the selected ISDM. Designers and subject matter experts develop the course(s) to meet the minimal standards for an online course, which would be documented by the organization. Using a developed minimal standards document an organization can create a situation where the release of the course can be very quick, but the course will meet a level of design that the organization is comfortable releasing. In the second phase of the model the organization identifies and documents advanced standards for online/blended courses, which will be used to increase the quality of the course(s) for the second offering. The course design team also discusses the evaluation data collected from the students as well as the data from the facilitator. This data is used to fine-tune the course as it is revisited during the 2nd phase. In summary, the model ensures a clear and defined course development process. Phase 1 of the model solidifies the minimal quality with which the organization is willing to release a course(s). Phase 1 also confirms an effective instructional systems design process, which will provide a process of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Phase 2 identifies the advanced quality standards the organization will strive to reach with the second release of the course. This second phase is critical for reaching award-winning, or recognized courses.

Lead Presenter

Joel Rodriguez graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) with a B.S. in Communications. He then interned at WTXF Television Station, Fox Philadelphia, in the promotions department. After finishing up at Fox he took a position in engineering at WTAE Television Station, ABC Pittsburgh, primarily working as video editor and master control operator. In 2004 Joel was awarded a graduate assistantship at IUP in the Adult Education Department, where he worked with elementary education students developing web based portfolios. Joel graduated with a M.A. in Adult Education & Communications Technology from IUP. After graduate school Joel worked as Instructional Designer for the LeBow College of Business, Drexel University, and then moved on to the School of Education to work as the Assistant Director of Learning Technology. Joel co-founded Youth Media Interactive, a non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, which focuses on youth media arts programming.
