Abstract

Rena Palloff and Keith Pratt have been studying the impact of community building in online learning since 1992 and have written 7 books on various aspects of online teaching and learning, the first of which, Building Learning Communities in Cyberspace, was published in 1999. Since that book was released, they have applied the foundational concepts of online learning communities to all aspects of online teaching. In this session, they will review their work by presenting community building as the foundation for course design, the facilitation of the course, assessment of student work, and most importantly, in training and developing faculty to effectively teach online. Participants will learn about their approach as well as acquire tips and tricks to embed this work in their own online teaching, course development, or faculty development work.
