Extended Abstract
The use of e-books and e-readers for textbooks has been a "hot topic" in higher education this year, following pilots at several institutions. This session will discuss Berkeley College's use of e-books in its classes, and some of the successes and challenges that have been met. This session will show you some of the advantages of e-texts and e-readers, and also honestly discuss some of the shortcomings and areas where further development is needed. Berkeley College has, becuse of its contract with the military and also becuase of its students all over the world, has mandated the option of using e-texts in all of its online courses. Students have found many reasons for using either the downloadable version or the Internet version. E-books, for example, can be downloaded once and not require the Internet if the downloadable version is used. If the Internet version is used, students can access their many e-texts from their computer, laptop, or any mobile device and have enjoyed carrying their many texts in their pockets, on their iPhones--or their iPads or Kindles. They have also found many other advantages as well, and these will be addressed in the presentation. There are, of course shortcomings as well, and these will also be discussed in this presentation.
