Abstract

For economic and family reasons, undergraduate nursing students who are in campus based programs are increasingly wanting to do at least one of their degree courses online. The purpose of this presentation is to describe the model developed by the author to enhance learner effectiveness and document current challenges.

Extended Abstract

In the province of Alberta, although there are close to 30,000 registered nurses, little is known about how those with a BN degree earned it. The two most common routes were a completely campus based degree, or completely online. It is only during the last decade that we have developed some blended programs, but generally that meant that certain assignments involved postings online, or related approaches. This author, however, was one of the "pioneers" of developing and delivering entirely internet courses, all of which pertained to knowledge transfer in regard to nursing interventions based on the use of music or other creative arts therapies, and which were developed for diploma prepared registered nurses who wanting to achieve a BN degree. However, that Post-RN BN degree was discontinued and we began accepting students from the regular 4 year track, including those who viewed these Spring courses as a way to finish their degree sooner, and at the same time maintain employment. This case study contains a description of the model developed by the author to enhance learner effectiveness and some of the salient challenges still to be addressed
