Abstract

In this session, we discuss the future of designing online environments through gaming and media that monitors human behavior and holistically assists the learning process by introducing content in adaptive methods, enabling learners to connect with material and develop an educational experience that becomes addictive.

Extended Abstract

Attempting to educate the masses within specific, pre-defined and ineffective timeframes, while using ineffective learning methods, has had a tremendous negative impact on learning. Even with the introduction of online learning environments there is a gap that exists within various groups which leaves opportunities for further investigation and research. Is it the human condition that causes these learning gaps within our society? Is it the methods we have so carefully and rigorously researched that are continuing to cause concerns? If so, how should these pedagogical approaches be introduced to increase their efficacy? How can we as instructional technologists develop effective learning solutions with what we know about people? People, not just learners, but actual human life with all the vulnerabilities and strengths of being human. The gradual development process is one that extends into many extraneous variables and surfaces many unanswered questions, because to develop is a life-long process; however, we have often attempted to expedite learning and measure its efficacy according to a short-term timeframe.

If we evaluate the human condition and investigate the patterns that cognitively drive human behavior, we should consider implementing those findings in helping people learn. The question becomes, “How can we implement such research and knowledge for the learning development that encompasses all ages, all cultures, increases degree completion/retention, and develops skilled people ready for careers, higher education or both?”.

The solution is as complex as the enigma of its condition. Furthermore, the conditions are individualized and not easily generalizable. However, we are closer today to solving these conditions with technology than we have been in the past. Designing online environments that monitor human behavior and holistically assist the learning process by introducing content in methods that adapt to the learner, increases the interactivity that allows people to deal with their human condition and develop a learner that enjoys the educational experience and becomes “addicted to learning” is a possibility that can become a learner’s reality.
