Abstract

Cutting edge applications gear up learning interactions for most commonly used mobiles. This session gives an overview of emerging trends in interactivity on mobile. The session also explains various challenges a learning professional can face while developing Mobile Learning and how to overcome them rapidly.

Extended Abstract

E-Learning is ever evolving into multifarious models. People don't just want to listen/stare at the trainer/screens. They want a two-way dialog. They want to actively participate in things happening within the class/online, and not just watch and listen passively.

Educationists are already perceptive about interactive experiences. Training becomes more involving and learners can easily understand and retain the concepts. Individuals of all age groups learn best by directly interacting with the course material. Interactivity is more than simply reading text on a screen. Interactivity is a way of engaging the user so they have a more interesting user experience. Interactivity essentially involves creating a context, posing a challenge or thought stimulant, eliciting a response, and providing feedback. You can do all this using a question, or text, or pictures, or specialized ready-made customizable interactivity models. But interactive mediums and content often come with a serious downside. Custom content can be expensive and time consuming to produce, straining or exceeding the budgets of many learning organizations and especially when they are to be used on mobile. Present mobile use wholly redefines the learner's interactive e-Learning experiences in day to day life. Anyone that does not live under a rock knows that there is a whole new world of interactive mobile technologies that has arrived in our lives. Such is the pace of innovation that it only takes a few months for an esoteric tool to become commonplace. M

obile learning has now emerged as a new wave of development, based on the use of mobile devices combined with wireless infrastructure. It has a strong foundational base when it comes to how the student will learn when there is an interaction of the learning material, technological platform, and the wireless network. Mobile learning is convenient and accessible from virtually anywhere. Mobile learning, like other forms of E-learning, is also collaborative; can be shared instantaneously among everyone using the same content, which leads to the reception of instant feedback and tips. Mobile learning also brings strong portability by replacing books and notes with small RAMs, filled with tailored learning contents. In addition, it is simple to utilize mobile learning for a more effective and entertaining experience. Mobile learning has various potentials as well as challenges. Its being widely acknowledged that mobile devices are poised to replace many traditional computing activities. All indications are that access to the Internet through mobile and wireless devices will soon outpace access through desktop devices. In the coming future, mobile learning will certainly go interactive. Reliance on internet bandwidth should be minimal once the content item is downloaded. Mobile learning content should be engaging, light on text and graphically rich. All this fits very well with the interactivity metaphor, rather than traditional navigation and page-turning.

The ongoing flux of smart phones with varied screen sizes and technologies supported such as Flash®, HTML5, it is becoming even more complex to select the right tools for delivering interactive mobile learning to the mass audience. There are such numerous technical aspects and challenges which one would come across while building mobile learning content. With mobile technology becoming a norm, delivering mobile learning in a faster, efficient and interactive way is becoming a challenge for every learning content creator. The need of the hour is of a platform to handle these challenges and develop interactivities for mobile in a rapid way. Learners, like everybody else, are getting exposed to increasingly interactive mobile experiences in daily life. Now they want their training to deliver similar experiences.

This session gives an overview of emerging trends in interactivity on mobile. The session also explains various challenges a learning professional can face while developing mobile learning. It would also demonstrate how rapid interactivity could be used as a platform to handle these challenges to develop interactivities at a faster pace for mobile learning.

Presentation Goals:

In this session, the participants will get to know about:

1.Interactivity: an overview and why learning professionals should care.

2.Emerging trends in interactivity you cannot ignore.

3.Technical aspects of design and development of learning interaction for mobile devices.

4.Ways to overcome some of the technical challenges while developing learning interactions for mobile.

5.How to deliver mobile learning in a rapid and cost effective way.

6.Delivering an interactive mLearning experience across devices from smart phones to laptops.
