Abstract

Not all data is equally useful. At their best analytics must be provided at the level of individual questions, and grouped by assignment, chapter, course or student learning outcomes. Soomo makes this possible, visual and simple.

Extended Abstract

Soomo Publishing has been redesigning curriculum based on patterns in student learning since the release of our first webtext in 2004. But in 2010 we began working with competency-based educators at Western Governors University which has resulted in deeper and more ambitious analysis across the board. The cycle time from initial release through analysis and redesign to re-release has steadily accelerated and enabled an impressive list of data-driven best-practices for courseware design.

One thing we learned is the depth of analytics is limited by content and interaction types. Making slight changes in what we present, how we present it, and what we ask students to do in response, has enabled us to know substantially more, at a deeper level and with greater confidence.

Finally, realizing the tremendous value of this data to all educational publishers and institutions we laid the groundwork for an open industry standard to collect and report learning analytics. This standard is already being used in pilot courses by Pearson, Jones & Bartlett, Elsevier, Harvard Business School Publishing and more.
