Overview
Providing audio and visual feedback is an effective way to communicate with students. Audio/video comments can be used to introduce assignments, give feedback on assignments, and make general statements to the class. Using free audio/video software, instructors can develop video files that address various learning styles. During the session presentation, procedures and development of video comments will be demonstrated. Strategies on how to use the Jing software and how to share these audio/video files with students will be explained. This session provides an overview and practical examples of adding audio to course work. In addition, a handout with a description of the process and tips will be provided.
Learning Objectives
1. By attending this session participants will be able to describe the importance of adding audio feedback in an online course.
2. By attending this session participants will be able to explain several key components of developing audio screen captures.
3. By attending this session participants will be able to judge the value of audio screen capture video in an educational setting.
Description
Research has indicated that incorporating audio comments can play an important part in the development of effective student feedback. The use of video flash in a course will help improve student communication and understanding. Students learn in many ways, and incorporating video/audio into a course will help students who learn best in a visual or audio environment. I have been adding audio/video comments in my classes and students have indicated that they prefer the audio over written. Using free software such as Jing, audio/video files can easily be made. Using Jing software, video flash files of lesson comments are made, FTP to a web server, and inserted as embedded HTML code in the learning management system (i.e. Blackboard, D2L, Moodle) for easy playback by the student. Results of a student survey indicated a strong student preference to seeing and hearing video feedback when compared to written feedback.
