Abstract
 
How do institutions demonstrate the quality of online programs? To answer this perennial question, this session brings together Sloan-C members whose institutions use the Quality Scorecard for the Administration of Online Education Programs to evaluate online programs. Panelists will describe implementing the scorecard, scoring the indicators, analyzing and comparing the results and sharing effective practices that to continuously improve the quality of online programs.

 

Lead Presenter
 Kaye Shelton Dr. Kaye Shelton is an associate professor in the doctoral program for educational leadership at Lamar University. She was previously the Dean of Online Education for Dallas Baptist University (13 years), a certified online instructor, teaching online since 1999, and also an online education consultant. Her education includes a B.A.S. in Management of Information Systems, an M.S. in Education emphasizing Online Teaching and Learning and a PhD in Educational Leadership at University of Nebraska. She holds a certification in Online Teaching and Learning and has published and presented on the subject of online education, including a recent book entitled An Administrator's Guide to Online Education. She has presented at numerous conferences and workshops, regarding the creation of an online education program and the best methods for teaching online. She has served as an advisor regarding online education programs for several peer institutions. Her latest research focuses on the quality of online education programs and developed a quality scorecard for assessment purposes.
   
 Karen Pedersen Dr. Karen Pedersen currently serves as the Associate Vice President for Extended Campuses at Northern Arizona University. In this role she is responsible for learner enrollment at over 30 locations; developing new market opportunities; actively collaborating with community college partners; and promoting online learning programs statewide, regionally, nationally, and globally. Prior to joining NAU, Pedersen served as the Vice President for Professional Studies at Southwestern College (Kansas). In that role she was responsible for engaging in scalable infrastructure projects; expanding military partnerships; launching innovative online programs; as well as positioning Professional Studies on a national stage by becoming a charter member of Transparency by Design (www.collegechoicesforadults.org). Pedersen holds bachelor of science and master of science degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a doctor of philosophy degree from Oklahoma State University. Her 25 years of experience in higher education spans teaching full-time at the University of Nebraska at Kearney to administrative positions in distance education at both private and public higher education institutions.
   
Deb Gearhart Dr. Deb Gearhart is the director of eTROY at Troy University. eTROY provides over thirty of Troy University’s degree programs online, with additional programs coming online Fall 2011. Dr. Gearhart has worked in the field of distance education for 25 years. Previously Deb served as the founding Director of E-Education Services at Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota and was there for the 11 years. Before joining Dakota State she spent 10 years with the Department of Distance Education at Penn State, now Penn State World Campus. Deb was an associate professor for educational technology at Dakota State University teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She has co-authored at textbook entitled Designing and Developing Web-Based Instruction and edited another publication titled Cases on Distance Delivery and Learning Outcomes: Emerging Trends and Programs, which was released in December 2009. Deb is a master reviewer and trainer for Quality Matters and has done consulting, training, and program review for distance education programs. Dr. Gearhart has earned a BA in Sociology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She earned a M.Ed. in Adult Education with a distance education emphasis and an M.P.A. in Public Administration, both from Penn State. Deb completed her Ph.D. program in Education, with a certificate in distance education, from Capella University.
   
  Dr. Lisa Holstrom has led online initiatives at the University of Cincinnati since 1999. Starting with an online program for Head Start teachers, she designed and implemented support strategies for non-traditional online students while working with faculty to deliver rigorous and relevant content. In 2008, she was awarded UC’s Established Entrepreneur Award for her academic entrepreneurial efforts. Today, as Assistant Dean for Enrollment Management and Support for the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services at UC, she oversees marketing and support for over 2,000 online learners. Her research agenda includes effective higher education administration of online programs.
   
 AnnMarie Johnson

AnnMarie Johnson, PhD, is the director of USM Online's Center for Technology Enhanced Learning at the University of Southern Maine, Portland. We help faculty teach high quality courses online and help programs develop high quality online degrees. Dr. Johnson teaches research methods--online of course--for graduate education students at two universities. She has a PhD in Educational Psychology and did her dissertation on students' experiences with their first online class back in 1998-99. Things haven't changed much....

   
 Nan Chico Dr. Nan Chico has designed and taught online classes since 1998 at California State University, East Bay, and has been the graduate director of the M.S. in Education, Option in Online Teaching & Learning (OTL) program since 1999. Additional positions during this time included Associate Dean of Graduate Studies; Director of Online Programs for the Division of International and Continuing Education; Director of Faculty Development; and Director of Online & Hybrid Support Services for faculty. She earned a B.A. in Sociology at Cal State Hayward (now East Bay), then a Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of California, San Francisco. She taught onground and web-enhanced classes for many years in the Sociology department before moving to the Interdisciplinary Studies office that houses the OTL program. She is now Professor Emerita and serves as an on-campus online program consultant for faculty and administration while continuing to teach online.
