Abstract

The art of setting a strategic plan along with student ownership and co-share development in a mobile, portal, and social networking deployment can greatly enhance the Academic Journey of each student.

Extended Abstract

When misaligned with the need of administration, faculty, and students, innovative technologies can distract from, rather than enhance, student success.  Texas A&M University at Kingsville's Mobile strategy, initially named the "Mobile Portal Graphical Interface for Revolutionary Performance Monitoring" or MPG/RPM, set the stage for a revolution when CIO Robert Paulson brought together creative students with academic strategists to design and blend mobile and social networking to help tomorrow's students successfully meet their educational goals.

This session outlines the strategic process used at Texas A & M University at Kingsville as well as the outcome of that process.  By redesigning Web pages to be more accessible to mobile devices as well as planning for the develoopment of several mobile applications, the institution meets the needs of learners in a timely, convenient manner.  Early aspects of the MPG/RPM included campus maps, allowing students to quickly find important offices or classrooms, and instructor contact information.  Developed in a 'live' environment with student ownership, the MPG/RPM project matches student needs faculty expectations to directly impact the learning experience.
