To help faculty make the transition to hybrid or blended teaching, institutions are creating faculty development programs to guide faculty as they redesign their courses and get ready to teach courses that are partially online and partially face-to-face. This is necessary because successful blended teaching requires a significant course transformation. Faculty must rethink and redesign their course, create new learning activities, and integrate online and face-to-face course components. Most faculty also have to learn new teaching skills in order to successfully manage online interaction, incorporate new methods of assessment, and effectively use the interactive and organizational tools found in course management systems.

Based on key elements of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee's Blended Faculty Development Program, this pre-conference workshop will identify essential elements of a faculty development program for successful redesign for blended learning.

Participants will gain insight into how a course can be redesigned to take advantage of the blended model, discuss their own possible redesign strategies with seasoned blended course instructors, and leave with strategies and materials which they can use in designing and teaching their own blended courses.

Participants will learn about the most popular social media tools and technologies and begin to evaluate how social media might best be used on their campus. Specifically, the presenters will examine how best to use these social media in a blended or online environment. Attendees will also develop support networks by leveraging social media tools and sites to facilitate best practices and collaboration during and after the conference.

Blended learning has the potential to provide cost effective, pedagogically-driven solutions that address challenges facing higher education. This workshop will focus on the large issues institutions must deal with in order to meet their missions of providing access to quality academic programs. Three recognized and respected academic administrators will discuss these issues, share methods and the strategies their institutions have implemented to find solutions. Participants in this workshop will work in small groups to discuss how these strategies can be brought back to their campuses and/or systems. A summary of the work will then be shared with participants post conference. The purpose of the collaborative document will be to provide a growing number of blended learning practitioners with a comprehensive review of “big” issues.

    Outcomes:

    Framework of blended learning
Identification and discussion of ‘big issues’
    Implemented strategies

Most universities have faculty who are creating open education resources and courses. Colleges and universities now need to take advantage of moving beyond the resource or course based approach. Using Open Education Resources (OER) in blended learning courses and programs promotes collaborative teaching, sharing resources and reduced costs for students.

Michigan State University (MSU) will share a case study on food safety knowledge network blended learning open education resources. MSU was awarded a generous a grant from the Hewlett foundation which have been further supported by USAID, World Trade Organization and World Bank. This work has blossomed into a model for other content area building on non-credit and extension outreach education and developing international opportunities with shared content.

MERLOT was a pioneer in providing open educational resources and developing the MERLOT Peer Review Process to evaluate the quality of those resources. MERLOT is a free and open online community of resources designed primarily for faculty, staff and students of higher education from around the world to share their learning materials and pedagogy.

According to a survey conducted a few years ago, over 80% of higher education institutions in the United States offer courses in a blended format (Arabasz, Boggs & Baker, 2003) and the projection is that in the near future over 80% of all courses in higher education will be blended. In the words of Gladwell (2000), we have gone over the "tipping point"; blended learning has become an educational epidemic. The three societal forces that have converged (the perfect wave) to drive this epidemic are technology, financial constraints, and quality concerns. The blended approaches to learning that have arisen to address these forces have lead to three major non-contradictory affordances - effectiveness, efficiency, and convenience. The result is an era of engagement and sustainable communities of inquiry. Blended learning has become the dominant paradigm in 21st century higher education. In a recent edition of the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks dedicated to blended learning, Laumakis, Graham & Dziuban (2009) state "the impact of blended learning is potentially monumental - permanently changing how students interact with higher education " (p.86). An inquiry-based approach to learning is based on John Dewey's (1933) philosophy that education begins with the curiosity of the learner. This workshop will provide participants with a "hands on" opportunity to design inquiry-based learning activities that engage students and align with the learning outcomes for a blended course or program.

The idea of "Perfecting the Blend" implies three important notions: first, an ability to improve and get better over time; second, a realization that because the world is constantly changing this year's perfect blend may be imperfect next year; third, the blend that tastes perfect downtown may taste bitter 90 minutes further out in the county. The idea of "openness" has important contributions to make to each of these aspects of perfecting the blend, and David will discuss these each in detail in this keynote address.

For many institutions, significant resources have been committed to provide access to higher education for place bound working professionals and national audiences of adult learners through online learning initiatives. Consistently, institutions find that campus students want and need the same flexibility that online courses provide. The investment made in creating opportunities for the distance student can be leveraged to meet institutional goals. The challenge comes when institutions, colleges and departments are faced with capacity challenges. How do campus leaders find the balance and maximize the investment?
