Abstract
Online students want to feel part of the learning process; technology gives them the opportunity to take an active role. This research examines best practices in education as schools use social media and technology to build community with, and create empowerment opportunities for, their students.
Extended Abstract

The face of education continues to change. While the traditional bricks and mortar programs still exist, in today's busy society more and more students are choosing to take their degrees either fully or partially online. They may not have the luxury of relocating for a degree, or of being able to attend specific class times. Whatever the reason, they choose the flexibility of online or hybrid learning. With that choice, however, most students still want to feel connected to their school, to their colleagues, and to their profession. Similar to GOV 2.0 and Web 2.0, EDU 2.0 is making that possible for the educational spectrum. Students now build community through blogs, wikis, facebook, LinkedIn, twitter, etc. In addition, students want to feel part of the learning process, and using technology such as wikis for exams, gives them the opportunity to take an active role. This research examines some of the best practices in MPA education and identifies how schools need to use social media and technology to build community with, and create empowerment opportunities for, their students. It is hoped that this session will become a dialogue so we can learn from one another.
