Evidence of Effectiveness:
Students who preview Advanced Nursing Skills web-based video demonstrations prior to class comment in person and on course evaluations about how the videos helped them prepare for class and clinical. One student commented, "I'm passing this class because of those videos." Another student stated, "I practice right with the video at home." Faculty assign the videos for students who miss class, need review, or require remediation. There are fewer requests for open lab time.
How does this practice relate to pillars?:
How this practice improves access: Providing web-based video demonstrations of nursing skills brings the demonstrations to the student making it convenient for them to practice or review without going to a laboratory. Students who are ill or need to miss class still have access to the demonstrations. Students can practice as often as desired at home and can review the skill at any time without the faculty member needing to repeat the live demonstration.
Equipment necessary to implement Effective Practice:
The following equipment is often available through campus media/technology centers:
Digital video camera
File conversion software to convert video files into web-friendly formats
Secure Server
Estimate the probable costs associated with this practice:
The costs are minimal if the equipment is available for use. Costs of faculty and staff time to create and update videos will depend on the content to be recorded.
