Evidence of Effectiveness:
Self-report survey of faculty practice and attitude regarding technology use. Data regarding use of the course management system with other courses. Data regarding the continued use of the technology after expiration of stipend support. Continued offering of the core online course.
How does this practice relate to pillars?:
faculty satisfaction: The project was designed to develop faculty skills in online instruction and to develop online versions of general education core courses. The project called for the formation of teams of 2 or 3 faculty who would be trained and work together to develop the target online core course. Faculty satisfaction was enhanced by: 1) incentive stipends of $3500 to $5500 per team member, depending on their role, as recognition of their increased workload; 2) significant training and support, including assignment of Student Technology Assistants to help with the work; 3) laptop equipment; 4) university recognition and specific expression of appreciation from the Provost; 4) use of the Graduated Development Model, which consists of a 3-5 semester process that moves faculty from training to practice with the tools to fully deploy online teaching.
Estimate the probable costs associated with this practice:
Direct costs included: $3500-$5500 per participant for stipends $2400 per laptop. Indirect costs included training staff, support staff, STA salaries, consultation, and replacment sections for courses moved to online
