Supporting Information for this Effective Practice
Evidence of Effectiveness:

"S.I.D.E. Road" has become the core curriculum in a Computer Proficiencies for Academic Success course entitled Preparation for Distance Learning, that all Distance Learning (DL) students in LBCC are encouraged to take a week before the beginning of their first (or other) DL course. Prior to the release of the "S.I.D.E. Road" project to the entire LBCC student population, a pilot testing and evaluation of the project was conducted to determine ease of use, ease of navigation, clarity of instruction, effectiveness of the activities, achievement of individual objectives, and the desired changes that the students would like to see included. The pilot testing was conducted by about 50 student volunteers in 11 sections of 7 cross-disciplinary, technology-based courses (TeleWeb and online). Highlights from the pilot testing outcomes include: (1) "S.I.D.E. Road" was found to be helpful in improving the study skills in the targeted areas, (2) survey respondents were significantly more in favor of taking a DL course with "S.I.D.E. Road" than without, and (3) a significant percentage of students first learned about college resources to assist students in DL courses through the "S.I.D.E. Road" project.

How does this practice relate to pillars?:

"S.I.D.E. Road - Success in Distance Education" project aims at assisting current and prospective Distance Learning (DL) students in having a successful distance learning experience and maximizing their comfort level when taking DL courses. "S.I.D.E.Road" is an original Long Beach City College (LBCC) Instructional Technology Development Center (ITDC) project, available on the Web or as a CD. The project addresses the well-known DL challenges of retention and success by providing students with tools that they can use to develop skills necessary for success in a DL environment. At the same time, "S.I.D.E. Road" helps students to increase their motivation, confidence and sense of accountability by assigning them an active role in understanding their own role and responsibility prior to, and during, their DL experience. More specifically, the challenges that DL students face may include procrastination, short concentration span, difficulties in following written text/media generated directions, or insufficient Internet or technology skills. In order to succeed in their classes, the most significant skills that DL students need to acquire in order to succeed in this mode of learning are (1) learning skills: tools and behaviors that keep the students motivated, disciplined, and in charge of their own learning, (2) basic Internet skills: working with computers and browsers to access the Internet; this includes the ability to identify resources both on campus and online that would help students handling academic and administrative issues throughout their distance learning experience, and (3) communication and collaboration skills: interacting with other students in the course, the course instructor, and other course resources.

Estimate the probable costs associated with this practice:

"S.I.D.E. Road" was developed by the team of the Instructional Technology Development Center at Long Beach City College is offered free to all LBCC students on the Web. Students who wish to use the CD version of the interactive modules may purchase the CD at the bookstore (or the online bookstore) for a minimal cost. Other educational institutions may link from their sites to the "S.I.D.E. Road" Web site on the LBCC server. Institutions who are interested in customizing "S.I.D.E. Road" to their specific need may partner with the ITDC to develop their version.
