The Art of Virtual Worlds as a Medium of Learning in an Online Course and Associated Real World Gallery Exhibitions

In Spring 2010, I taught an online course for the Department of Philosophy at UMass Boston, Art and Philosophy in Second Life and Other Virtual Worlds. The course took students into the virtual worlds Second Life and OpenSim, where they explored topics in the philosophy of art. In association with the course, I organized simultaneous exhibitions of virtual art at four real galleries, in Boston. Milan, Nice, and Amsterdam, connected by live video streaming. In this presentation, I will discuss both the online course and the four international exhibitions as venues for investigating artistic creativity in relation to emergent technologies.
