Best Practices for On-line Testing and Assessment

On-line tests and other assessments offer a two-edged solution to faculty. On a positive edge, such tools provide a means for assessing student progress and learning, whether in courses taught at a distance or as an alternative to in-class testing. Unfortunately there are negative edges including technology failures during testing, less control of the test environment that can facilitate cheating, and a more constrained set of testing options. Clemson University’s Teaching and Learning Services has spent several years in partnership with faculty to assess these and other issues and develop a set of best practices for on-line testing and assessments.
