Designing for engagement: Marginalia, an annotation add-on to the Moodle discussion forum

Marginalia (http://www.geof.net/code/annotation) is an open source extension to Moodle that adds annotation features to discussion forums.  Users can highlight text and write margin notes in the forums.  In addition, these notes can be searched, shared with others, and quoted when writing new posts.  Marginalia helps turn forum posts into resources for future use, makes it easy for teachers to provide feedback, and encourages participants to write "weaving" messages that connect ideas and summarize the discourse.  Participants will have a chance to try out the various features of the tool at the session. 

This is a hands-on presentation; participants are encouraged to bring their laptops.
