Designing effective online courses to help students succeed has always been a challenge for instructional designers. Many online courses have experienced lower success rates then campus courses. The instructional design center at Northern Virginia Community College has identified three approaches - Pacing, Student Interaction, and Social Presence - to help faculty increase student success in their online courses. This presentation will explain the three approaches they have identified. It will discuss how they helped faculty implement the approaches in the course design. It will also discuss the implications for integrating these approaches.
