Lecture Capture/Webcasting Technology: A look back and the look forward

Figuring out where lecture capture can and should go from here might be easier if we better understand its history and its origins at PARC in Palo Alto and universities like Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Cornell, Carnegie Mellow and Standford.  What emerged after 20 years of intensive commercial and educational development is the now ubiquitous, almost universal, multi-pane web browser interface for showing lecturers with their visual aids.  Despite all the R&D, that multi-pane interface concept remains a very poor way to view webcast lectures. So where from here?
