Developing online or blended classes has a large time commitment and moving physical science classes to online environments has similar difficulties. This work outlines the repurposing of a note taking device, a smart pen, into a lecture capture system with a minimal learning curve. This has allowed for facile translation of live science classrooms into asynchronous lecture modules (pencasts) for viewing outside of class. The pencasts allow for capture of in-class lecture sessions, incorporating both audio and text. The utilization and time commitment will be discussed, as well as strategies utilizing the pen from both instructor and student perspective.
