First Year retention is one of the largest, and least understood, challenges facing Higher Education today. In fact, half of all student drops occur in the first 20 units. This challenge also presents tremendous opportunity: if you can solve this mystery, you can double your student population without adding one new person. The University of Phoenix has found a way. In early 2010, the University of Phoenix and Axia College launched an innovative new ‘First Year Sequence’ for all incoming students. This 24-unit sequence of 8 courses presents a gradual introduction to the complexity of learning technology.
