Threaded Discussions: "You mean I have to get on more than once?" An Objective Scoring Process

How can you improve online threaded discussions? How can your grading of these discussions be more objective but take into consideration the quality of the response? Are your students posting their responses at the last minute so basically, it really isn’t a discussion at all? How can their responses be more comprehensive? Whole class or small group discussions?
