The Sloan Consortium is an institutional and professional leadership organization dedicated to integrating online education into the mainstream of higher education, helping institutions and individual educators improve the quality, scale, and breadth of education. Membership in the Sloan Consortium provides knowledge, practice, community, and direction for educators. Originally funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Sloan-C is now a non-profit, member sustained organization.

Sloan-C can help you connect, learn, and educate. As an individual, you have the opportunity to connect with others involved in online higher education. Through our publications, workshops, and conferences you have the opportunity to learn and keep abreast of trends in online higher education. You will be able to take the knowledge you acquire and apply in your online classroom.

As an institution, your faculty can take advantage of Sloan-C offerings for a fraction of the cost of maintaining an in-house resource.

Sloan-C does not provide grants.

A call for nominations is sent out in the Spring. The Sloan Consortium’s Nomination and Election Committee reviews submissions and provides a slate of candidates to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors votes on the candidates. Board terms begin January 1st.

The annual call for award nominations occurs each year in June. Individuals and/or institutions are recognized in the following categories: Ralph E. Gomory Award for Quality Online Education, Most Outstanding Achievement in Online Learning by an Individual, Excellence in Online Teaching, Excellence in Faculty Development for online Teaching, Most Outstanding Online Teaching & Learning Program, Excellence in Institution-Wide Online Teaching and Learning. The first step is to become a member. You can than take full advantage of Sloan-C resources
including publications, online workshops, conferences, and webinars.

To help make quality online education accessible and affordable for anyone, anywhere, at any time, the Sloan-C community shares techniques, strategies, and practices in online education that have worked for them. All effective practices are peer reviewed to insure quality and to give submitters some documentation for tenure and promotion files. The effective practices are based on Sloan-C’s quality framework comprised of the following pillars: Learning Effectiveness, Scale, Access, Faculty Satisfaction, and Student Satisfaction. No. Current board members vote to elect board members. But, you can nominate people to serve on the board.

The Sloan-C National Catalog of Online Education is currently under construction. Upon completion, the catalog will enable (1) users to identify programs and courses that are best suited for them and (2) institutions to create, organize, and maintain course catalogs about their institutions.
