Frequently Asked Questions - Sloan-C Certificate Program

The Sloan-C Certificate program prepares educators to teach and improve online courses using the Sloan-C pillars of quality in online education—learning effectiveness, scale, faculty
and student satisfaction, and access.

The Teaching Certificate, also known as The Sloan-C Certificate, prepares educators to teach and improve online courses using the Sloan-C pillars of quality in online education—learning effectiveness, scale, faculty and student satisfaction, and access.

As part of the Certificate program you will be asked to post deliverables in a specific area
of the Certificate platform under the guidance of a personal mentor. We use Moodle as our
learning platform.

Unfortunately, the workshops you took last year will not count towards the Sloan-C Certificate program.

We expect you to complete the entire program within 12-months. Most participants complete
the program in less time.

The certificate consists of a nine-week foundation course plus three Sloan-C workshops in a
learning specialization that focuses on improving overall competency within a specific area
of academic focus. Additionally, you will receive one-on-one mentoring while you complete
the Program.

Yes, there are four areas of specializations or tracks.

The specializations/tracks are: Administration, Blended Learning; Design and Delivery and
Tools and Techniques.

You can use the College Pass to cover the three workshops that comprise your area of
specialization, but you cannot use the College Pass to cover the cost of the nine-week
foundation course.

To receive The Sloan-C Certificate, you must take the nine-week foundation course plus three workshops in the area of your specialization.

All of our facilitators are professional educators who are considered experts in their field of study.

From the onset of the nine-week foundation course, we expect you to complete the entire program within 12 months.

Because mentoring is a personal collaboration, we allow our program participants to select
their own mentor based on their area of interest and the background and expertise of our
mentors.

There is a prerequisite workshop for anyone who has little or no online teaching experience.

The Program costs $1499. This fee includes the nine-week foundation course, plus personal
mentoring throughout the completion of the Program. The three workshops taken in one’s area of specialization have an additional cost.

As with all of the Sloan-C online workshops, the program is asynchronous with several live
sessions. There is a schedule of activities and deadlines by which deliverables must be
posted to forums.

No, you do not have to specialize. But you must take three elective workshops.

If you do not specialize, you must complete the nine-week foundation course and three
elective workshops. These workshops must be selected with the advice of your mentor to
ensure they will support your area of interest so that you can bring the knowledge gained to
your online courses.

To obtain the certificate, you will be required to post to discussion threads on a scheduled-basis, complete a learning contract with your mentor and submit a portfolio report for each of the three workshops taken as part of your specialization track. Additionally, you will be required to prepare a final presentation for the benefit of your mentor and peer group.

We require everyone who has little or no experience in online teaching to take the prerequisite Sloan-C workshop, Getting Started: The First Step Toward Online Teaching.

We expect our participants to honestly inform us if they do not have experience prior to beginning the nine-week course. We have found that those who participate without prior experience have a difficult time understanding the concepts and/or applying the ideas taught.

Yes, you only need the prerequisite workshop if you have little or no online teaching experience.
