The rapidly developing higher education enterprise is presenting leadership challenges for many institutions attempting to define and establish their space in the higher education food chain. In a world no longer defined by geography and time zones, institutions are assessing their relationship to online learning balanced with the desire to maintain traditional values and services. The advent of technologies that connect students and instructors globally in both synchronous and asynchronous can stress institutional systems and services to meet the demands of the remote learner. The complexity of the variables exerting pressure on today’s higher education providers demands well informed, and visionary leaders willing to confront both the operational and strategic issues presented by online learning.

Since 2009, IELOL has been convening a wide range of individuals identified by their senior leadership as the next generation of thinkers and decision makers to explore and consider what such a role entails at the personal, local and global level. Working with the IELOL Faculty, a group of senior-level leadership from across the globe, participants are challenged to transition from the operational and management aspects of their careers to becoming the strategic leaders for a new higher education platform consisting of face-to-face, blended and online learning options.

This webinar will engage in a wide-ranging discussion of the IELOL experience with the program co-directors, Lawrence Ragan from Penn State’s World Campus and Bruce Chaloux Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Sloan Consortium, Inc. and Kathleen Ives, Associate Executive Director and Chief Operating Office for the Sloan Consortium. Past participants will also be available to speak about the role IELOL has played in providing the skills and thinking required to embrace the next level of leadership for online learning.

Bruce Chaloux, Ph.D. serves as Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Sloan Consortium, Inc. Prior to assuming his duties at the Sloan Consortium, Inc., he was a past president of the Sloan Consortium, directed the 16-state Electronic Campus initiative of the Southern Regional Education Board. The Electronic Campus, the South's "electronic marketplace" for distance education courses and programs, has grown to include more than 10,000 credit courses and 500 degree programs from more than 300 colleges and universities in the region. He served in the Graduate School at Virginia Tech for 13 years, including four years as Associate Dean for Extended Campus Programs at the institution’s main campus in Blacksburg and earlier for nine years as Associate Dean and Director of Tech’s Northern Virginia Graduate Campus in suburban Washington, DC. He earlier held positions on the staff of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and as an academic affairs administrator and faculty member at Castleton State College (Vermont). He has earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Florida State University in 1979 and has business degrees from the University of Florida (master’s in 1972) and Castleton State College.

Dr. Larry Ragan has served in leadership roles as co-director of the EDUCAUSE Learning Technology Leadership program (2005-2006), and since 2009, co-directors the PSU/Sloan-C Institute for Emerging Leadership in Online Learning. Dr. Ragan co-directs the Center for Online Innovations in Learning at Penn State University. Dr. Ragan has served in leadership roles at the World Campus as the director of instructional design and development (1995-2008) and faculty development services (2008-2012). Dr. Ragan conducts research including leadership issues in online learning, the quality of online instruction, and the definition of competencies for online teaching success (COTS).

Kathleen S. Ives, D.M. has worked in online technology for over 20 years and serves as The Sloan Consortium's Associate Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer where she oversees the organization's operations as well as facilitates workshops in higher education online best practices. Formerly, Dr. Ives oversaw all forms of alternative instruction at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, MA (distance learning, accelerated programming). She teaches in on-ground, online, and blended modalities for University of Phoenix and Bay State College in Boston, MA. Additionally, she serves on the Massachusetts Department of Education Distance Learning Advisory Board. Dr. Ives began her career at CBS and helped to develop the service that evolved into Prodigy. She then spent fourteen years designing and implementing consumer online information services, first at AT&T and then at Verizon where she spearheaded the development of the nation's first online Yellow Pages product, now called superpages.com. Dr. Ives has degrees in communication, communication management, and organizational leadership from the University of California at Davis, the University of Southern California, Annenberg School of Communication, and the University of Phoenix-Online, respectively.
