Description
Introduction: 

Multimodal design, focusing on student-centered learning environments, places choice of delivery and content under learner control. Emerging technologies and improved learning management systems provide faculty with new opportunities to exploit the benefits of multimodal design by providing multiple course delivery options and course content formats. In this workshop, you will be introduced to various teaching and learning theories relevant to multimodal design in order to include multimodal design options in your own courses.

Learning Objectives: 

Upon successful completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Analyze various teaching and learning theories and their impact on multimodal course design
  • Design an activity with multimodal content and delivery options
Outcomes: 

The following general outcomes apply to all Sloan-C Institute workshops:

  • Develop skills in distance education and online learning
  • Expand current knowledge and skills in online and blended teaching and learning strategies
  • Develop grounding in the pedagogy of online teaching and learning
  • Gain hands-on experience as a distance learner

In every workshop, the following resources will be provided:

  • Workshop Orientation - Learn how to navigate successfully in the workshop learning spaces MOODLE and Blackboard Collaborate.
  • Live Panel Discussion - Make community connections and gain valuable information about the key concepts and skills addressed in the workshop. 
  • Engaging Interactions - Interact with other learners and experts through various social media tools and online discussion forums. 
  • Interesting Workshop Materials - Review a variety of multimedia presentations, readings, community discussions, and other materials.

Registration Information
Seat space permitting, it is possible to register for any workshop until the last day of that workshop.

  • If you wish to receive an Award of Completion for any 1 week workshop, you will need to register and enroll in the workshop no later than 3 days after the workshop begins.
  • If you wish to receive an Award of Completion for any 1/2 day synchronous workshop, you will need to register and enroll in that workshop before 12:00pm ET the day the workshop begins in order to attend the entire synchronous session.

 

Workshop Enrollment Information
Upon registering and paying for this workshop, you will receive an enrollment key in your email the day before the workshop begins.  Please make sure you add workshop@sloanconsortium.org  to your email contacts so you receive this email.

All our workshops are located at http://community.sloanconsortium.org.  You will need to create an account on this site in order to access your workshop.   On the day the workshop begins, you will log in to our workshop area and use the enrollment key you received in your email to access the workshop.   You will not be able to access the workshop before its scheduled start date.

  • You must enroll in any 1 week workshop no later than 3 days after the workshop begins if you wish to receive an Award of Completion for the workshop. 
  • You must enroll in any 1/2 day synchronous workshop no later than 12:00pm ET on the day the workshop begins if you wish to receive an Award of Completion for the workshop.

This enrollment key is for your personal use and should not be shared with anyone else.

Cancellation Policy: 

The following cancellation policies apply:

  • If you register and pay for a Sloan-C workshop and are unable to enroll (due to personal schedule conflicts, illness, etc), we will be happy to apply your payment to another Sloan-C workshop in the same calendar year upon your written request to workshop@sloanconsortium.org.  No refunds will be given

  • You may request to transfer to a different session of a workshop for which you are registered at no additional charge provided the request is made before the day the workshop opens. Once you use your enrollment key to access a workshop, no transfer to another workshop or refund will be allowed.

  • Sloan-C strives to deliver all workshops as scheduled. However, if fewer than 15 people register for a workshop, or if a workshop facilitator falls ill, we reserve the right to re-schedule or cancel workshops.  If this happens, we will give as much advanced notice as possible.  In the event a workshop is cancelled or rescheduled, you will be given the opportunity to select another workshop in the same calendar year that fits your schedule and your registration payment will be applied to that workshop.  No refunds will be given.

Sloan-C uses an open-source LMS called Moodle for the asynchronous component of workshops. Moodle provides a flexible and user-friendly set of asynchronous collaboration and learning tools. As with most open-source technologies, the Moodle software is free, making it a very cost-effective software package for any institution or company, without sacrificing quality. Moodle is a robust environment that is dynamic, interactive, and provides cross-platform learner access through a standard web browser.
