Workshop Description
Introduction: 

Formerly titled: Accommodating Students with Disabilities: Leveraging the Online Learning Environment

Traditional institutions of higher education that have made significant commitments to online learning need to understand how to better serve students with disabilities. This course will delve into the legal mandates that obligate these institutions to provide online support to students with disabilities and detail how to fulfill the obligation to serve this often ignored population.

Jane Jarrow
Jane Jarrow, Ph. D. is the President of Disability Compliance in Career and Online Learning (DCCOL) and of Disability Access Information and Support (DAIS). Dr. Jarrow received her BS and MS degrees from Purdue University and her Ph.D. from Wichita State University. Her academic preparation was in the area of Speech/Language Pathology. 
She was a full-time faculty member at The Ohio State University in Speech/Language Pathology for seven years before assuming a position as the Executive Director of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD). AHEAD is an international professional membership organization providing technical assistance, information, and support to individuals involved in issues of disability access in higher education. 
Dr. Jarrow is a skilled presenter and speaks knowledgeably about the legal and educational mandates surrounding the participation of persons with disabilities in postsecondary settings. Throughout her 14 year tenure with AHEAD, and more than 15 years in her current position with DAIS, Dr. Jarrow has traveled extensively, presenting workshops and training sessions focused on these issues. Through DAIS, Dr. Jarrow also provides technical assistance, conducts policy reviews and site reviews, participates in grant writing and editing, and is the author/publisher of a number of significant resource materials. 
In 2006, Dr. Jarrow joined with a number of experienced disability service providers to create a new resource for the higher education community. Disability Compliance in Career and Online Learning (DCCOL) is considered one of the most influential sources of information regarding the policies and practices associated with accommodation students with disabilities in online learning. Instead of focusing on the technology required to assure accessible materials, Dr. Jarrow's focus is on the use of technology as one tool among many necessary to fulfill the federal mandates for full access to online educational opportunities for students with disabilities.

Moodle: Sloan-C uses an open-source LMS called Moodle for the asynchronous component of workshops. Moodle provides a flexible and user-friendly set of asynchronous collaboration and learning tools. As with most open-source technologies, the Moodle software is free, making it a very cost-effective software package for any institution or company, without sacrificing quality. Moodle is a robust environment that is dynamic, interactive, and provides cross-platform learner access through a standard web browser.

System Requirements

Moodle will work in any modern web browser, however, moodle works best in a range of specific browser types (see below). Your browser should also have both cookies and javascript enabled. These are typically enabled by default, but if you think these settings might need enabling, check the documentation for your particular browser for how to do these.

To make best use of what moodle has to offer, it is recommended that users choose a browser that supports moodle's in-line HTML editor. This is a WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) editor with an interface much like you would see in most word processing packages.

This in-line HTML editor will only appear if you use one of a specific range of browser types that knows how to start the editor. If you do not use one of these browser types, you can still use moodle just fine, but without the luxury of a WYSIWYG editor. Luckily, there is a supported browser that will work on all major operating system types. The list of supported and not supported browsers is shown below:
