Workshop Description
Introduction: 

Formerly titled: Intermediate Second life and Advanced Second Life

Are you a resident of Second Life? Are you an educator? If you answered yes to either question then this is the course for you. Pedagogy in Second Life will introduce intermediate users of the popular 3D virtual environment to various teaching tools useful to educators. It’s for the practitioner who interested in developing new skills for teaching and managing classes.

  • 1-Hour Live Workshop Orientation - Learn about Moodle 2.2 and BlackBoard Collaborate. Navigate the workshop space

  • Viewing of Live Sessions available for 1 year

  • Understand how Second Life is being used for educational purposes
  • Visit some exemplary Second Life educator sites
  • Learn about effective teaching practices and begin creating Second Life content for your students

Michael DeMers
Michael DeMers/Gadget Loon (SL) is a Professor of Geography at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. He holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Kansas and a Graduate Certificate of Online Teaching and Learning from New Mexico State University. Dr. DeMers has taught junior high school, high school, and college students and has been using Second Life as a means of delivering his Geographic Information Systems (GIS) class content for online students. He is the author of four GIS books including Fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems and GIS for Dummies. His research dealing with the use of Second Life for education has been highlighted in the GIS Educator Click Here to Read and presented at national meetings. Dr. DeMers was recently interviewed by NPR's Scott Simon for Weekend Edition Saturday. Click Here to Read He has submitted a manuscript to the Journal of Virtual World Research dealing with the use of Second Life building tools to create learning objects and is discussing the possibility of a special issue of the Journal of Geography concerning the use of Virtual Learning Environments and geographic education with the editor.
