2012 A. Frank Mayadas Leadership Award in Online Education
 

The A. Frank Mayadas Leadership Award in Online Education was established by the Sloan Consortium in 2009 to honor outstanding individuals who exemplify the leadership and ideals of A. Frank Mayadas, founding president of the Sloan Consortium. This award may be presented annually to an individual whose leadership in the online education community has been transformative.  Leadership may be demonstrated in any of several ways, including mobilizing online programs of quality, scale, and breadth at the institutional, system, or state level, implementing innovations that improve online learning methodologies, integrating online learning into the mainstream of higher education, or using online learning strategies to improve access to higher education.

About the Award

The highest individual recognition offered by the Sloan Consortium comes in the form of the Mayadas Leadership Award, which acknowledges and celebrates leadership in online education. This award recognizes prominent professionals whose work has had significant positive impact on online learning within the higher education community.  Through this award, the Sloan Consortium seeks to recognize those innovative individuals who most clearly have demonstrated the ability to advance online learning.

Guidelines and Eligibility

  • Nominees must be individual members of the Sloan Consortium, directly associated with leading, coordinating, or managing an online learning program in higher education; this program must be one of quality, scale, and breadth.
  • Nominees must have demonstrated sustained leadership that has been transformative either within their educational institutions or within the broader online education community.
  • Nominees must show mature and effective professional skills, leadership ability, and vision.
  • Nominees may not be currently serving on the Sloan-C Awards Selection Committee or be a member of the Sloan-C staff.
  • Anyone may submit nominations for the award.
  • Awards will be made at the discretion of the Sloan-C Board of Directors, in consultation with the Sloan-C Awards Selection Committee.  The Board of Directors may choose to grant no award or a single award in any one year.

The Awards and Recognition Committee of the Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) invites nominations for the 2012 A. Frank Mayadas Leadership Award.  This award will be presented at the Seventeenth International Conference on Online Learning in Orlando, Florida, on October 11, 2012.  This award consists of a commemorative plaque.  In addition, Sloan-C will make a contribution in the amount of $2,000 to a scholarship fund of the recipient’s choice.  Award recipients will also be invited to present a talk at the Sloan-C Annual Conference on a subject of their choice, reflecting their area of professional expertise and interest.

Nominations must include (1) an overall summary of the nominee's leadership activities in higher education, highlighting how the nominee's work has had a significant positive impact on online learning within the higher education community, (2) a detailed description of the how the nominee has demonstrated sustained leadership that has been transformative, either within his/her educational institution or within the broader online education community, (3) a proposed award citation, and (4) up to five letters of support, including letters from at least one faculty member and one administrator.

About A. Frank Mayadas:

Dr. Frank Mayadas currently is a Senior Advisor at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. 

Prior to coming to the Sloan Foundation, Frank Mayadas spent 27 years at the IBM Corporation. His last position at IBM was serving as Vice President, Research Division, Technical Plans and Controls.

At Sloan, Dr. Mayadas has been involved in a number of areas: online education, globalization of industries, industry studies, and career choice in technical fields. He started the Sloan online learning program in 1993. This program (known as Anytime, Anyplace Learning) has had a profound impact in moving the academic field forward. He is the founding president of the Sloan Consortium, also known as Sloan-C, the premier society for professionals engaged in online education programs. A large number of disciplines are covered by member academic institutions of the consortium, ranging across humanities, engineering, business, and social-, life- and physical- sciences. More than 1000 full programs (certificate and degree) are offered by consortium members.

Dr. Mayadas received a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Cornell in 1965, and a B.S. from the Colorado School of Mines in 1961.
