The newspaper headlines say the recession’s over, but it’s going to take a long time for the economy to recover – especially when it comes to finding a new job. So, how can you boost your hireability in a tough job market? Learn new skills! That way, when the next job interviewer asks, “What did you do for the five months you were out of work?” You can say, “I took a class in computer programming, and improved my website-building skills.” You don’t need to move into the dorms with a tiny fridge to do it. You can learn just about anything online! In fact, enrollment in online classes is increasing about 12% a year. That’s according to the Sloan Consortium – a group working to make online education available to everyone. Check out these education websites:

  • University of the People. The tuition-free school was founded by the chairman of the homework assistance Website Cramster.com. The school is not accredited yet – which means it can’t award degrees until it gets approved. However, you can still take full programs in business administration, and computer science. The website is: UOPeople.org.
  • Another online university website: Open Course Ware Consortium. It offers courses like architecture, anthropology and literature from 200 institutions worldwide, including top schools in the United States, like Notre Dame and MIT. The website is OCWConsortium.org.
  • Finally, you can listen to lectures at AcademicEarth.org. The website offers video lectures from more than 100 professors at leading universities, like Yale, Harvard, and Stanford. You can even group lectures by theme – like physics or philosophy - and create an entire semester’s worth of classes for yourself.
