University of Illinois - Springfield uses Impatica to eliminate the need for plug-ins by converting PowerPoint lectures into streaming Java presentations.
How this practice supports access: We are using Impatica extensively. It really cuts down on student frustration with plug-ins (such as the realmedia plug-in). We have purchased only half a dozen of these and placed them on our tech staff computers. So, our model is to have faculty members record their narrations with PowerPoint and share their drive over the LAN. We simply convert the lectures and mount them on the server (a simple, quick process). For a smaller operation, one could get by with only two or three copies.
Anecdotal evidence to date suggests that this practice reduces technology barriers by eliminating or reducing the need for plug-ins.
Moderate - Impatica costs $299/copy for educational users
