Description of the Effective Practice
Description of the Effective Practice:

How this practice supports access: The ERAU DDL Undergraduate Course List contains a link to a description for each offered course. Each course description includes a link entitled "Book Sale and Buy Back." The link in each course description leads to a common textbook sales page on which a listing header indicates the number of books available for sale. The default listing for available books requires users to search for books in groups of ten (in effect, as search engine results) arranged alphabetically by course. The user also can change the number of results to display on one page. Furthermore, there is a book search feature that allows students to search by course, campus, location, and title.

Specific listings of books for sale contain a complete array of book information (ISBN#, Title, Author, Date Posted, Asking Price, Condition/Comments) as well as contact information (Name, Email, Home Phone, Work Phone, Location, Campus).

The testbook sales page has clear instructions for how to post books for sales by creating a user profile. There is also a rating feature where book sellers can be rated by buyers and have their ratings be displayed.

The textbook sales page also contains appropriate disclaimers making it clear that ERAU provides this as a service but is not responsible for handling disputes and/or other consequences for using the service.

Supporting Information for this Effective Practice
Evidence of Effectiveness:

First-hand evidence: I found this feature relatively easy to use. Finding out whether there was a book for sale in the courses I selected was quick, as was finding out information on specific courses.

Estimate the probable costs associated with this practice:

Other Comments:

When I first used the feature, I expected to be led to a course-specific listing of available books. While that would be a nice to have feature, I suspect that the cost would be prohibitive. The functionality of the existing feature is easy to master, and the minor inconvenience of having to search for a book by course is outweighed by the convenience of the textbook sales feature IMO. Also check out ERAU's course information pages for each course -- go to the Undergrad Course List page (see URL above) and click on any of the courses.
