What keeps students coming
back to the online learning modality?
by Ruth Bennett
My convictions about what keeps students engaged come from my own
experience as faculty and from what students and other instructors tell me
and is supported by the literature on online retention, both in education
and industry. The teachers and students I teach are forthcoming about what
they like and do not like when taking online classes. I use their
disappointments and complaints as a guide and as recommendations to those
who can use the information to improve the online experience for students.

Myths and Misconceptions Might Be
Useful
by Kimberly Eke
Lately I’ve been thinking about the myths and misconceptions surrounding
online learning and more specifically -- what it takes to develop and teach
online courses. As a result of the current economic climate, we are finding
more and more faculty members and administrators asking for assistance in
moving their offerings online. That means we have more opportunities to see
and experience first-hand, some of the myths still prevalent today.

Grants
by John Bourne
Ok, this is a really serious effort to get you to provide your input about
what topic you see as important for research in online education. We are
interested in going after grants from various sources. Reply to this

Time Saving Tips for Teaching
Online
by Kaye Shelton
I am passionate about teaching online—it is so exciting to me to know that
I am now able to work with students all over the country and sometimes in
other countries! But when I share this with other online instructors, I am
sometimes told that teaching online takes too much time.

Learn From the Experts - The Sloan-C 2009 Workshop Series
Podcasting
in Higher Education: Current Trends and Application - Mar 4
- 13
Podcasting has had a revolutionary impact on formal and
informal teaching and learning. Rising out of the advent of the Apple iPod,
podcasts have grown into the mainstream of online media since their inception
in early 2004. The power of the individual to use podcasts to communicate
globally has important implications for educators.

Using
Moodle to Create Online Courses - Mar 4 - 13
Moodle is an open source web-based learning management
system and a low cost alternative for educators to create vibrant online
content. The development of the Moodle platform was guided by a social constructionist
framework of education which assumes that the knowledge a student receives is
produced by the groups to which he or she belongs, or by their particular
discourse agreements. Moodle tools have an emphasis on: group work,
collaboration, communication, sharing, activities, and critical reflection.

Getting
Started Primer - Mar 11 - 27
The "Getting Started Primer" is a pre-requisite
to the Sloan-C workshop "Getting Started: Online Course Development
Basics." This workshop introduces potential faculty and/or
administration to online education fundamentals. Participants will not only
learn about the concepts discussed, but through taking the workshop,
technologies will be used first-hand to gain practical "hands-on"
experience

Introduction
to Second Life for Educators (SL Workshop Level 2) - Mar
18 - 27
Second Life, an online virtual world, has become one of the
web's most popular activities and an increasingly popular venue for teaching
and socialization among educators. Second Life immerses participants in a
virtual world of their own making. Second Life enables educators to offer
data visualization, simple simulations, and collaborative spaces to either
augment their online course or serve as their online classroom.

Copyright
Compliance for Online Educators - Mar 25 - Apr 3
Online educators need to understand their own liability for
copyright infringement when using materials to supplement an online course.
Copyright owners have sued and will continue to sue individuals. You also
need to know how your original works can be protected. Publishers and the
academic community have established a set of educational fair use guidelines
to provide standards and protection for educators.

Retention
Strategies in Online Educations - Mar 30 - Apr 8
The topic of retention continues to gain interest across
the fields of higher education. Online student retention rates are
significantly lower than their on-campus equivalents. With record numbers of
students studying online, it is imperative that academic institutions
discover why online learners have a significantly lower rate of persistence
than on-campus students.

Getting Better: ALN and Student Success
In the U.S., only 38 of every 100 ninth graders enroll in
college; of these 38, only 18 complete bachelors' degrees within six years.
Asynchronous learning networks (ALN)—asynchronous, highly interactive,
instructor-led, resource-rich, cohort-based learning—can yield high success
rates. Growing demand for online education and the expectation among higher
education leaders that ALN learning outcomes will exceed face to face
outcomes reflect belief in ALN's power to engage learners. Sloan-C's body
of research confirms that ALN is especially suited for the anytime,
anywhere, affordable access that is responsive to learners in a knowledge
society. In fact, the original principles of ALN are the same principles
that characterize ALN programs that have high student success rates. This
paper includes vignettes from two- and four-year ALN programs that have
used these principles to achieve high success rates.
