Resilience and Faculty
by Janet Moore
Faculty often remark on the ways teaching online positively affects teaching practice in all modes [1]. Another important advantage of online teaching is its resilience. The possibility of campus closure due to H1N1 is a reminder that faculty can assure that their courses can continue without disruption. Here are a few things faculty can do now to assure continuity for their students. Click here to read the blog post.
Virtual Symposium 2009
by R.T. Brown
Why go virtual? Many states have travel restrictions in place and it has become difficult to secure any funding. In Ray Schroeder's blog, (http://www.recessionreality.blogspot.com/), story after story details the dire state of higher education. It's simply depressing. However, we can't simply become stagnant. This was the key motivator for our virtual symposium options. When removing the costs of hotel, food, and travel, the virtual conference options becomes a much more viable scenario.

Reviving the Primary Purpose of Copyright Law: "Don't Stifle Creativity!"
by Linda Enghagen
In late 2007, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals handed down a decision in the case of Perfect 10, Inc. v. Amazon.com, Inc., A9.com Inc. & Google Inc. breathing new air into the gasping lungs of copyright law's fair use defense. In a well-reasoned decision, the court rejected formulaic applications of the fair use factors reminding everyone that they are not to be "treated in isolation, one from another. All are to be explored, and the results weighed together, in light of the purposes of copyright."

Avoiding Faculty Burnout - May 27 - June 5
As more institutions are offering ongoing degree programs online, faculty burnout increasingly is a concern for faculty, administrators, and instructional designers. Online faculty tend to spend more time preparing and teaching their courses as compared to onground faculty. For faculty, this translates into more grading, a 24/7 access mentality, excessive amounts of computer time, as well as more people pulling and grabbing for faculty time and attention. This workshop will explore the issue of academic management in online learning and ways to ensure that faculty can incorporate online teaching into normal academic life. In addition to learning skills to avoid burnout that derives from multiple sources, participants will be encouraged to share their own institutional practices as part of the conversation.
