Call for Presentations for 3rd Annual Emerging Technologies for Online Learning Symposium

Call for Papers Deadline is January 18th.

We invite you to submit a proposal for the 3rd Annual Emerging Technologies for Online Learning Symposium, to be held July 20-23, 2010 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, CA. This year’s symposium is offered by Sloan Consortium in partnership with MERLOT and Moodle Moot.

The symposium focuses on the technologies that drive online learning effectiveness, highlighting research, applications and best practices of important emerging technological tools. We encourage submissions related to instruction, networking, assessment, open educational resources, new media and support services. Tracks call for demonstrations of research and practice related to pedagogy, immersive learning, innovation, community and scale as well as hands-on use of technology.

When submitting your abstract for review, you will have the option to have it considered for one of the following Conference Tracks. There are eight tracks plus one for pre-conference workshops.

Program Tracks include:

- The Cutting Edge
- Pedagogy
- Faculty Development
- Inventive Uses of Media and Tools
- Immersive Learning and Virtual Environments
- The New Learning Communities
- Emerging Technologies for Administration, Infrastructure, and Support Services
- Architecture and Applications
- Pre-conference workshops

In addition to submitting a proposal to one of the eight tracks, we invite you to submit a proposal for a pre-conference workshop. We are looking for intensive, in-depth, highly interactive sessions that explore key issues, tools and subject in great detail. The pre-conference workshop format allows for more detailed descriptions and walkthroughs during the quieter time before the conference.

The workshops have a high standard for innovation, creativity and the value-add that participants will take from the session. It is generally expected that there be a significant set of program materials beyond a power-point slide set, including sample materials, guides, etc. The program should not be a show and tell from one institution, but instead it must demonstrate a larger view.

Proposals must be submitted by January 18, 2010. Submit proposals online at http://et4online.merlot.org/.

For complete details on online submission of proposals, visit our Website at http://www.sloanconsortium.org/ET4online.

Brought to you by the partnership of the Sloan Consortium, MERLOT, and MoodleMoot.

The New 2010 Sloan-C Certificate

The Sloan-C Certificate prepares educators to teach and improve online courses using the Sloan-C pillars of quality in online education--learning effectiveness, scale, faculty and student satisfaction, and access. A unique feature of the certificate program is that expert mentors work individually with each certificate candidate to accomplish specific goals. The certificate consists of a 9-week foundational course and a variety of electives or learning specializations that focus on improving overall competency within a specific area of academic focus. The workshops in each specialization are structured to encourage skill development and practical application within the participants' specific job function. Upon completing the 9-week foundational course, individuals can select 3 individual electives, one specialization, or multiple specializations that best suit professional development objectives.

Participants achieve a Sloan-C Certificate by completing 3 chosen electives. Specializations will be cited on the candidate’s certificate of completion.

Specializations include:

- Administration
- Blended Learning
- Design and Delivery
- Tools and Techniques

The Sloan-C Certificate foundation costs $1,499 plus three (3) required electives; priced at $345 (10-day workshop) or $495 (3-week workshop). Elective workshops may be funded by coupons available through Sloan-C membership discounts and the Sloan-C College Pass professional development package.

Click here for more detailed information. For any questions regarding the certificate, please e-mail certificate@sloanconsortium.org.

Copyright Compliance for Online Educators - Jan 13 - 22

Online educators need to understand personal liability for copyright infringement when using materials to supplement an online course. Copyright owners have sued and will continue to sue individuals. Publishers and the academic community have established a set of educational fair use guidelines to provide standards and protection for educators.

Universal design seeks to make online learning available and accessible for all types of learners. The catalyst for the Project was a May 2009 Department of Education report that states "…on average students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction." Participants of the ongoing Community Writing Project use the Sloan-C Wiki as a platform to respond to the Department of Education report and share their insights into what makes online education effective.
